Donno... how do you define marriage? To me, the easy solution is the state is responsible for civil unions, which are contracts between consenting adults that wish to be considered 'jointly' under the law while marriage, a religious rite, should be left up to churches. More or less, a civil union would take the place of a marriage license.

The social institution under which a man and woman establish their decision to live as husband and wife.
If they're mature enough to make the above decision, they should be mature enough to get out of it as well. Rather than wasting state time by getting in and out.

I find it somewhat troubling that the government is so deeply involved exclusive romantic relationships...

The getting in part is easy. The getting out part is usually going to involve some kind of court decision just like most contract dissolution matters do. That is the appropriate place for government.
In NY you cannot get a divorce just because you want one. One party must show cause. There is one beauty though. Constructive abandonment counts as cause. That means I could get my divorce by refusing to fuck the bitch for a year. That gave her grounds to file.

I find all government efforts at social engineering troubling, including a perverted tax code.

I voted no, I think the governmental rights granted to married couples should remain in place. By separating marriage it's implied that the state rights would cease to be. Don't get me wrong though, I do agree that marriage should be between two consenting adults regardless of sex or sexuality. I just don't agree with separating it from the state, although some may see that as an intelligent way of furthering the gay rights agenda.

I don't give two shits about the gay rights agenda. I oppose social engineering of any kind.

So what can I, a homeless 20 year old, and you, a 30 something year old business man do about getting rid of this bullshit?
