I have a load of fresh horse poo, but i dont think i fancy pasteurizing it in the kitchen. What else can i use as a bulk substrate? Will straw work by itself? Will i need to pasteurize what ever i decide to use as my bulk substrate?
Peace.

pasteurize a small amount in a 5 gallon bucket outside.. go 50/50 poo and straw. Yes, you will need to pasteurize.. If I had hpoo I would find a way.. I take two 5 gallon buckets, stacked into each other, and two pots of boiling water.. stays at 175-155 for the two hours.. just take it outdoors.. unless you area is freezing.. then
There are other options.. all around the place.. but you have poo

Fresh poo won't work, you need aged. Is coir an option?

..and, I am not sure if it is in the free previews, but in the RR video, he shows cubes growing on a straight straw log.. You can also PC the poo in quart jars.. (I am assuming if you have fresh poo.. you are near horses and old poo is around, as Doc_T pointed out).

RR's method of bulk pasteurization works very well for me AND I can do it in the kitchen without getting in big trouble from the Boss Woman.
Quote:
RogerRabbit said: For small amounts, I always pasteurize in a large pot on the stove with the manure in quart mason jars. Get your substrate to field moisture level, then load the jars. I don't use lids, but just wrap aluminum foil over the top of the jars. Set them in the pot of COLD water and make sure the water goes at least 2/3 of the way up the jars. Put a plate with a weight on top if necessary to keep the jars from floating. Turn on the stove and bring the water to a boil. Let boil for five minutes, then shut off the stove and put the lid on the pot. Leave the jars to sit for two hours, then remove and use whenever they cool down. If you use this procedure, the temperature in the center of the jar will not exceed 160F, but will be above 140 for over an hour. It works perfectly for me. RR
For additions to manure, IMO coffee works well.

The only thing I do differently is; I use lids on my jars and I use my PC without the weights added.

Ok ill grab some right now.
Yea there a loads of horse fields around me.
Will adding coir to horse poo and straw make a difference?
I didnt think you could pastureize hpoo as it kills some good bacteria that the fruits need whilst growing?

You have to pasteurize poo, if you use it. But again, you want aged, not fresh.

that.. and adding stuff is the easiest of experiments we all do. I think it does make a difference, experimenting with amounts of each is the key.. find your solution. I would give shredded wheat straw and poo a go if I was in your shoes. But straight hpoo will always work, if prepped correctly.

I use to think coir was shredded husks, but I've seen bags of shredded coconut husks, and they are different than the coir bricks like bed-a-beast , etc..
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coir
Quote:
Coir fibers are found between the husk and the outer shell of a coconut. The individual fiber cells are narrow and hollow, with thick walls made of cellulose

I have never used either.. but I bet they act the same.. I have dissected coconuts, from the outer shell to the husk, is a matter of density of the same material.. so I thought.

for my last batch of bulk pasteurizing, I bought paint strainer for 5 gallon buckets.
put the substrate ingredients in the bag then poured excess boiling water to cover the bag. let that sit covered for a couple hours then poured out the excess water. then I let the substrate cool naturally in the bucket to about 80. the buckets lid also has a 1/2" hole I cut into it and stuffed with polyfil.
then when I used it, I would squeeze off excess water, like I was making a snowball, until only a few drips came out. then put into FC and spawned my grains to it.
pretty much every step the teks here have, except I got the substrate to field capacity after pasteurization, instead of relying on 1 gallon water to 1 brick of coir method.. last time I tried that I got contams, pretty positive it was due to excess moisture in the sub.
everything was in the bag this way, and the bag is somewhat durable so it will last multiple uses.

Sterilizing kills those beneficial bacterium, while pasteurizing does not.

Ok awesome.
Is the only way to effectively pasteurize hpoo on a stove with a saucepan?
No other way to do it? someplace other than the kitchen?
Iv got fresh hpoo because the local farm had fresh hpoo and composted hpoo which had all sorts of other stuff decomposing with it like old straw, grass, other animals poo (cows, chicken etc)
Also as i am using WBS as spawn to bulk is there anything i can do to minimise contam risk?
