Obama Pulls a Chavez - bans Fox from Press Pool Other networks fight back

Unprecedented: White House Tries to Ban Fox from Press Pool

Today the White House stepped up its attack on Fox News, announcing that the network would no longer be able to conduct interviews with officials as a member of the Press Pool. The Pool is a five-member group consisting of ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox News and NBC organized by the White House Correspondents Association. Its membership is not subject to oversight by the government.

Before an interview with "Pay Czar" Kenneth Feinberg, the administration announced that Fox News would be banned from the press pool. This marks the first time in history that an administration had attempted to ban an entire network from the press pool.

To their credit, the other networks objected. They told the White House that if Fox were banned, none of the other networks would participate. The White House relented, but in an apparent act of petulant retaliation, it restricted each network to a two-minute interview instead of the standard five.

"I think it's outrageous that the White House tried that. Number ONe, That's my first reaction. My second reaction is I'm really cheered by the other members saying "No, if Fox can't be part of it, we won't be part of it". What it's really about, to me, is the executive branch of the government trying to tell the press how it should behave. I mean, this democracy, we know this, only works with a free and unfettered press to provide information." David Zurawik.

Anyone who helped put this administration into office should have the good graces to be embarrassed by this.

Thanks for fucking all of us along with yourselves.

Not sure how banning Fox for a couple days is 'fucking all of us'? (It's lame, sure. No argument there.)

You fail to understand the implications of this and Obama's insistence on a poodle press.  He's drawing up an enemies list to rival Nixon, he cannot brook criticism of any kind and has no qualms whatsoever about using the power of his office to attack free and private individuals who dare to speak about the lack of clothing he wears.  Let me state that last part again.  The most powerful person in the world is attacking individuals who use their free speech rights to criticize and, horrors, report on malfeasance in his administration.  This is an unprecedented in my lifetime abuse of power.  It is no small matter.

First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist;
Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.

Obama is a fascist and the tiny number of people with Hitler signs that I'm aware of were Larouchies.

It doesn't matter that you don't like Fox News.  It doesn't matter that Obama doesn't like Fox News.  What does matter is that there is a fascist in the White House intent on eliminating any voice of dissent from the supposedly free press.  I case you have just awoken from a millenium long slumber I suspect you might want to educate yourself on just how much opposition press is encountered by conservatives or even Republicans.  NY Times, WAPO, LA Times, CNN, MSNBC, ABC, CBS, NBC.  All solidly liberally biased with editorial content and bleed through to news articles.  Why don't we shut them up, too?

Looks more and more like it every day.  Nationalizing banks and automobile companies, setting pay rates, suppression of non-compliant press organs, demonizing private citizen dissent.  And that's just in 8 months.  Mussolini was a fascist but it took him more than eight months to accomplish it.  That doesn't mean he wasn't a fascist before he took office.

Please theres no reason to debate whether Obama is a fascist leader.  The whole idea is silly and its clear you just wanted to be polemical, which is fine except theres no need to then defend that statement as if its something you truly believe.  Just admit it was meant to be over the top to make a point and move on.

No, I believe that if he had his way he would impose a fascist dictatorship with him at the head of it.  He is certainly taking several steps in that direction and has proposed several more.

except that the whole leaving MMJ users alone part isnt true either, an
interview done on CNN showed a very elated anti-drug spokes person stating
that the memo recently released has said absolutely nothing, it was double
speak from the Obama administration... and the hippies were thrilled
simply because it mentioned marijuana

TPMDC dug into it, and here’s what happened.
Feinberg did a pen and pad with reporters to brief them on cutting executive compensation. TV correspondents, as they do with everything, asked to get the comments on camera. Treasury officials agreed and made a list of the networks who asked (Fox was not among them).

But logistically, all of the cameras could not get set up in time or with ease for the Feinberg interview, so they opted for a round robin where the networks use one pool camera. Treasury called the White House pool crew and gave them the list of the networks who’d asked for the interview.

The network pool crew noticed Fox wasn’t on the list, was told that they hadn’t asked and the crew said they needed to be included. Treasury called the White House and asked top Obama adviser Anita Dunn. Dunn said yes and Fox’s Major Garrett was among the correspondents to interview Feinberg last night.

Simple as that, we’re told, and the networks don’t want to be seen as heroes for Fox.

TPMDC spoke with a network bureau chief this afternoon familiar with the situation who was surprised that Fox was portraying the news as networks coming to its rescue.

When Chavez refused to renew the broadcasting license of a station that actively participated in the US sponsored coup against his government, as well as making up all manner of slanderous rumors up about him with no proof(ie. that he had a homosexual relationship with Fidel Castro). I think that it was more than fair and the network was warned that this would happen if they did not clean up their act.

Now if what novumorganum says is correct it's nothing like this and Obama doesn't even have the balls to tell a network that makes up lies about him and pretty much all of the non-(extreme)right, as well as trying to foster a movement that has obvious aims to remove Obama from office by whatever means necessary, encourages people to bring guns to the president's public appearances, oh and as well they speak about the merits of if the US were subject to another terrorist attack on a regular basis. The fact that he doesn't have the balls to tell this network that they are lower on priority for face time than a brick wall does say something negative about how he will deal with people who are just off the wall loons.

Funny thing is that bush had exclusive press relations for almost the entirety of his presidency. Not just networks to which he gave preferential treatment, but to individuals as well, in an effort to block specific questions and styles/topics of questions from being asked. Much more than something as small as this, which seems to be an issue manufactured by fox anyway. Funny thing is there was a total lack of criticism on the part of the people currently criticizing this during that time. Is the ability to ask questions of the president a partisan issue?
