I love Amanita sp., and would love to see a thread on PNW varieties. I haven't seen many Amanita yet this year, but here was my first Amanita muscaria this season:

10/22/2009 North Seattle

Let's see them all!!!

Not in the traditional sense, but yes they can get you fucked up. Research Amanita muscaria on this website and read some trip reports.

I have never eaten them, but have heard it is closer to alcohol than psilocybin.

The Amanita genus contain the most deadly mushrooms in the world though, so make sure you study before you try ANY species.

Here are a few likely A. muscaria buttons found in my neighborhood cemetary:

I'll check on them in a few days for updates.

Thanks to those who posted, now come on PNW, lets see your Amanitas!!!

Thank you for posting those here, I was hoping you would. I am utterly astounded by your find. :bliss:

Are those muscaria earlier than you would say is normal? It just seems like their were more around here last year, but it is still a bit early...

The yellow sunshine on the right looks closer to Amanita aprica.

Not something you'd want to ingest.

I think you're right on the coloring, but the base looks wrong for A.aprica.  Would you agree?

Course, the warts kinda make me think aprica too.  Hrmmmm...

The more I'm reading, the more I'm torn.  The cap looks dead on for A.aprica, the base is confusing as I'm getting conflicting info, and the season is wrong I think.  But is sure /looks/ like one from the top.

Quote:

Amanita aprica J. Lindgr. & Tulloss
It is reported from the spring and very early summer. None of the material collected in the fall and reviewed by the species' authors proved to belong in A. aprica..

Interesting, i wish Rod had mentioned what they turned out to be.. i imagine A. muscaria.

The base appears indistinct, it could be an atypical representative of the yellow form of Amanita muscaria but the frosty appearance of the warts on the pileus makes me question it.

Also, the olivaceous ones on the left might be closer to the A. gemmata/pantherina group.

Yeah, I assumed them A.pantherina.

I really really appreciate your eyes on the Aprica though.  You kept me from learning something the hard way today and expanded my knowledge some

Your welcome.

A. pantherina and A. gemmata don't occur in north America, mushrooms fitting these descriptions from north America belong to several yet to be named taxa.

There is Amanita ameripanthera Tulloss nom. prov. but your specimen is too light colored to fit that species definition.

A.pantherina is easier to say than "A north american variant of a similar mushroom to what they call A.panterina in Europe."    If they get an official name, I'll be glad to call them that instead
