Me too.
Cyanescens look alot like papilionaceus, but they bruise violet/black and have jet black sporeprints. Their caps are also not a defined shape, they are not cyanescens if the cap is a perfect circle.
Here are the cyanescens i found: http://imagefrost.com/i/BZU.png
Those are definitely not cyanescens.

gibblet was referring to Panaeolus cyanescens.... Not Psilocybe cyanescens. And the mushroom posted is neither (it is a Gymnopus species), though I'm pretty sure they were thinking it might be Ps. cyanescens. Hehehe.

I gotta confess that when I saw these I was on my lunchbreak and not *really* hunting. Sort of more casually looking at the ground as I am wont to do now.

Rainstorm, the moment you laid eyes on those Cyans, did you just know you'd finally found them?
I know that is how I felt when I saw my first Cyans.

Exactly! I knew *immediately*, it was almost as if they'd beckoned me over. I'd been finding tons of non-actives for a while and just had this feeling of uncertainty - like "hmm, those *might* be something, not sure, don't think so." But with the cyan patch, there was immediate confidence; no question. I spent some time with my first patch, I tapped spores, spread mycelium and left most of the young ones untouched - I think the fungi liked me, because they guided me to several more patches in the area. I'm used to crispy cubies, too. Fresh cyans are quite potent and pleasant! Thanks, fungi.

OK, so I was on my lunchbreak, waiting for a phone call which would decide whether or not I needed to go meet someone or not. I figured I'd wait 10 minutes and then go grab a bite and go back to work. So I grabbed my book, (Atrocity Archives by Charles Stross) and decided I'd chill at the park and wait for the call.
It was raining so there weren't many people except a few joggers. I walked along the path to find a nice place to sit, and was checkin' out the psytherella and the cool bright yellow ones I haven't bothered to ID yet, and literally almost stepped on a patch of cyans.
I knew they were cyans immediately, there was no question even without examining them up close. The more mature specimens had gorgeous blue rings around the caps and they were happily growing out of a thick mycelial mat in "soil enriched with wood debris". We became fast friends and the rest is history

Nice. I still can only report my cinctulus for this season but we're not even at the midway pointe so there's still hope. In the meantime, I'll enjoy the mycoporn from the rest of you guys.

Tapping the cap of the mushroom has no significant effect on how many spores are released. The basidium projects the spores from the sterigmata when the spores are mature. Tapping the mushroom does not effectively dislodge spores. Maybe a couple, but such an insignificant amount that it is a waste of your time.

Understood and agreed. The benefit comes from dislodging the spores that have collected on the caps, stipes, annuli, incurved margins and various debris like pine needles stuck to the stipe. In that way, you're dislodging spores that the basidia have already released back into their native environment rather than into your picking bag. In my humble opinion, of course.
