Pin Pics Updated
    #11302900 - 10/22/09 11:29 PM (8 years, 28 days ago)

These are a few basic BRF cakes dunked and rolled and placed in the fruiting chamber. I have a few odd pins growing, I was wondering if any of these pins gave signs of problems such as lack of FAE, Humidity Problem, Dry Cakes, etc. I'm really just trying to take in as much informatin as possible at this point. As you'll see below I have an elevated Shotgun FC with perlite. Cakes were let be for a week after full colonization. I have 3 BRF cakes left 2 near full colonization and 1 semi-close.

Straw
Gypsum
Peat Moss
Calcium Carbonate
Vermiculite

I really want to do a bulk grow feel free to offer suggestions.

The one cake has a pretty decent pin set, from what I read I should expect 80% of those pins to abort, is there anything I could do to prevent this with my supplies?

Of the two pictures below the first was taken three days prior to the second, as you can see the cap came out like that, any ideas as to why?

Thanks, your help thus far has been nothing short of excellence. Much respect is due. :bow2:

I'm not really sure what the calcium carbonate is for... Are you thinking of hydrated lime (calcium hydroxide)?

In a bulk grow, many will argue that a casing layer is not necessary with cubes. If you haven't gotten the peat, you may want to leave it off.

I hear straw is fairly difficult to work with as far as bulk subs go. Stick with coir, its almost completely contam proof and easy peasy to work with.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

There is no reason to expect 80% aborts.

How often are you fanning and misting?

To me the cakes look a tad dry.

I fan and mist around 4 to 5 times a day, I always thought I was going to over do it. At first I didn't know my simple 1 dollar spray bottle had a mist setting. When I went to spray, it knocked most of the vermiculite off. I added a top layer of verm to some but not all. Later I realized it had a mist setting so I've been going crazy with it. I've been reading conflicting information about water on pins but I think I remember reading some of RR's notes and it is not supposed to hurt. Any clarifications want to be made?

This grow has givin' me mad experience, I feel like just this grow alone I've made so many small minor mistakes that I'm excited to not make them again.

I don't know if you guys in Cultivation get to see various mushrooms. I always like posting some "wild" mushroom pics in my cult. threads. Heres Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata

4 to 5 times a day is good.

I like to fan, then mist, then fan again.

Don't be afraid to mist often as long as you don't soak the cakes.

You can feel confident to follow whatever RR says....he's one of the masters at this hobby. :super:

The mushroom in focus in image two, is it getting ready to open, or is that how cubensis grow?
