Newbie needs verification - Healthy Myc+Metabolites or Contams?
    #11302086 - 10/22/09 09:28 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Noticed a few jars with some "red specs" that were not visible 12ish hours ago. After freaking out a bit, then reading a bit. It seems the spots might be "Metabolites". In other words....mycelium urine. I have never heard of this before today.

I noticed a red spot early on in the colonization stage, but it just disappeared.

Just wanted to share this. Maybe others can learn about this as well. For a moment I thought they may be pins just beginning to form. I try an look on the glass half full side of things.

Thanks,

AHM99

My jars did the same exact thing....I think they are metabolites, I Checked a Roger Rabbit post a little bit ago and it explained that metabolites can be red yellow and even brown.

Metabolites.

The presence of metabolites indicates the mycelium is stressed, because:

1. Stressed by over colonizing the substrate - needs to be spawned and fruited
or
2. Stressed by fighting competitor molds - metabolites are a sort of antibiotic
or
3. Stressed by high temperatures.

Red spots show no real change today. They sure as heck aren't growing. Temps at the bottom of the incubator were a bit warm. Temp has been backed down from the low to mid 80's to about 73. Cant believe I have never heard of these metabolites before.

Good thing you caught that. Colonizing above 80F is a terrible, terrible idea. Mycelium generates its own heat as it consumes and colonizes - the interior of bulk substrates or jars is always a few degrees above ambient. Personally, I always let my jars colonize at room temperature (around 70F) as internal temperatures in the 80F-85F range are only favorable to competitor molds and bacteria.

I was worried about things being too cold since we are moving into fall. Some mornings when I wake up it is pretty brisk in the room. Long as the temp in the jar box does not fall below 70f I will not worry.

Thanks,
