wbs smells after cook
    #11299516 - 10/22/09 03:18 PM (8 years, 3 months ago)

I don't have much experience with WBS, I've never succesfully grown any myself although a friend has given me a couple quarts from time to time to spawn to coir, I have never inoculated and grew the WBS myself

Anyway, I soaked 8 quarts worth of WBS for around 15 hours and then rinsed it very very well.
I let it drain until it didn't stick to my hand
I then loaded the jars, covered with foil and pced em for around 70 to 80 mins

after the pc depressurized I took them out and gave em all a good shake and then put them back in to cool overnight

the next day I inoculated each jar with 1-2cc of B+ spores from spore syringes I made myself

the thing is, the jars have a weird smell coming off them.. it definitely doesn't smell like mold or bad growth, but it almost smells like the WBS got cooked during the pc
the wbs in the jars doesn't look burnt and theres definitely not that many busted kernels but I'm wondering if somehow it could hinder growth

as I have no experience, and couldn't find any answers through the search, I figured one of you guys could help me

thanks!
the WBS I'm using is red ribbon no corn blend from canadian tire

yeah my WBS gives off a pretty distinct scent after i simmer it, almost like i just boiled a big pot of pasta.  I'd just put them on a shelf and forget about em for like a week or two.  if they have somethin funky growin in em or nothing growing at all chuck em

Yeah my WBS always smells after I simmer and cook. It's almost like a hearty grainy oaty smell. It kinda makes me want to taste the WBS because it smells like it'd taste pretty good. Pasta is a pretty good analogy. Whenever I prepare my WBS I think of it like cooking pasta as far as the water content goes.

Yeah, it smells.... kinda good... completely normal though.
