Proper time to pick question
    #11298060 - 10/22/09 09:52 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Gotta quick question for you fellas/gals. Even if the shroomies are small, but the veil is starting to break, do I still pick them, or let them get bigger? Got my first grow, first GT flush this morning, and there are some of the smaller ones with their veils broken, but not sure to pick. Any help

yeah i'd pick em now. as long as the veil has started to break, they arent gunna grow much more. you can wait until it completely breaks away if you want em to get a little bigger but they arent gunna grow a whole lot more.

congrats on successful completion of your first grow!

i disagree with the above.
depending on genetics..sometimes veils tear early. and sometimes there is no veil. dont pick it until you are sure it is done growing. generally when the cap fully opens that is when it has reach full maturity.

I agree... sometimes with cubes i'll get an extra inch on the stipe after the veil tears.. i usually wait till the caps are flat to pick

Oh...I was under the impression that when they flatten out, they are already in the process of turning darker to black color which meant rotting.

i was corrected on this yesterday.

best time to pick is after cap opens before spores drop.

some pick earlier but there is no need..

some pick after spored drop which is also fine, spores just taste bad..

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

according to my readings from this site

If you pick them before cap fully opens and spores begin to drop they are best in potency. After opening they are good for printing, then eating.

why would the caps opening have an effect on potency?

This is the worst time to pick for quality and taste.  I prefer to pick just as, or before the veil tears.  Spores taste nasty, and while the fruits may 'stretch' a bit after the veil tears, they rarely put on any extra weight, while losing a lot in quality.  Pick early for best results and fruit quality.

If your veils are tearing while the fruits are small, it's a sign of insufficient substrate moisture.

Are the spores not in there anyway by the time the veil is breaking?  If you pick just as the veil is tearing you must be ingesting spores because I can always see some spore deposits on the upside of the veil as it breaks.

I dunk and rolled, plus I fan and mist 4+ times a day. The cakes still feel most. Could it be that it is the first flush by chance? Thanks for all the previous answers, but I still need this question answered

Maybe ill stop letting my tubs go for that extra day then...  :strokebeard3:

and what exactly do you mean by "losing a lot in quality"?  just taste wise or are you saying the psilocin/psilocybin is actually degrading within the mushroom while its still a live fruit?
