The Shroom Liberation Front
    #11296397 - 10/22/09 12:55 AM (8 years, 9 months ago)

These Britts take their mushrooms quite seriously and want to get laws lifted.

The SLF - The Shroom Liberation Front
A little bit about us
The Shroom Liberation Front is ultimately a Hearts and Minds initiative.  We seek to capture new and existing like-minded people to the fold who are interested in saving the magic mushroom from its undeserved illegal situation.  Whilst magic mushrooms are currently outlawed we cannot, unfortunately, recommend that you pick, grow or take them for fear of being accused of inciting law breaking – which we don’t condone.  Yet we also understand that there is a huge cross-section of society who simply will not accept the ban and carry on growing, picking and taking magic mushrooms regardless. The SLF does not agree with the law change regards magic mushrooms, and we feel it is our mission to campaign, and seek out support, to have the magic mushroom's illegal status reversed, so that the people who do ignore it, can be saved from persecution. We simply do not see the act of taking, growing or picking magic mushrooms as a crime, and that responsible use of mushrooms, by consenting adults to be a harmless, fun, and spiritually satisfying experience.
The SLF also wants to be a resource to people interested in magic mushrooms, what they’re like, how they grow, how to grow them, and what part they’ve played in humanity through the ages.  You’ll find within our walls a large amount of very interesting information, and we’ll always try and present it from an unbiased, informed perspective allowing you to make up your own mind.
The SLF is really annoyed at Clause 21. However in some respects we can understand it.  It is a knee-jerk response from a particularly fickle government, faced with what to do about magic mushrooms being legally sold on street corners in the UK in 2005.  They were caught on the hop at an awkward time (in the run-up to the May 2005 general election) but even we were surprised (like everybody else) by their overbearing heavy handedness in making magic mushrooms a Class A drug.  We have to understand that before Clause 21 a relatively harmonious status quo existed between users and the government, and as long as the mushrooms weren’t prepared in any way, they could legitimately be picked, grown, taken, as fresh produce.  It seemed as if the government thought that as long as it was kept under the table "out of sight", then it wouldn't kick up a fuss.  However with the success of Dutch Smart shops successfully profiting from magic mushroom sales across the Channel, it was inevitable that they would end up being marketed and sold openly in the UK.  This development was a cause of some frustration to true mushroom fans in Britain, as before then, 'we’d' always taken a sensible and responsible approach to mushrooms with a healthy and vibrant community always at hand to assist newcomers and give advice. However 'we' also felt that there wasn't much wrong with being ableto buy them openly either, which seemed perfectly normal too. 'We' just felt that there needed to be some form of regulation in place dictating who could buy mushrooms and some age restriction - which there wasn't. The sale of magic mushrooms had become completely unregulated in the UK, which wasn't the case with the Dutch, who had their own trade associations and much closer knit integration with the policy makers.
What’s done is done.  The mushrooms have been banned, and the Shroom Liberation Front will always argue against this – yet  what we are most infuriated at is the Class A categorisation that was handed out with it.  Why suddenly after years of perfectly acceptable if underground use, with little if no need or justification to make them class A, was the category suddenly imposed. It just doesn't make sense. It's as if public opinion, rather then actual evidence-based fact, drove politicians rather than informed health professionals. Is this an acceptable methodology for 'dishing' out drugs classifications? We have to assert that this classification is completely unjustified and out of keeping with the mushroom’s amazing qualities.  It is now in the same league as heroin.
It is, however, on this front that we believe lies a chink in the government’s armour regarding mushrooms and what the SLF believes should be "our" main focus as an organised group, and how we feel SLFers should respond.  We believe wholeheartedly that the whimsical approach the government takes to classifying drugs is wrong, and the whole system needs to be dismantled and rebuilt in keeping with our modern society and established cultural practices of drug use within it. It is on this front that the SLF wishes to highlight the very important work of the organisation Transform.

Transform Drug Policy Foundation is a charitable think tank that seeks to draw public attention to the fact that drug prohibition itself is the major cause of drug-related harm to individuals, communities and nations, and should be replaced by effective, just and humane government control and regulation.
Transform has emerged in response to the increasingly apparent failings of current UK and international drug policy. As illegal drug use and the problems associated with illegal drug markets have continued to grow, Transform is providing new thinking on alternatives to the current enforcement-oriented regime of prohibition.

Transform is equally opposed to the government's Class A classification and have openly criticised the government's handling of the matter. Please read its article here and within our own domain here. We can only echo such sentiments and strongly agree with Transform on all counts.
Transform gave evidence at the Government's Science and Technology Select Committee Inquiry which was conducting a hearinginto scientific advice to government. The inquiry focused upon the mechanisms in place for the use of scientific advice (including the social sciences) and the way in which the guidelines governing the use of such advice is being applied in practice across Government. It tested the extent to which policies are “evidence-based”.
One of the issues being addressed is the classification of illegal drugs, and Transform gave evidence to the committee on the current drug classification system. Transform produced a report ( here) summarizing the failings with the UK drug classification system, which we list below:

Transform Drug Policy Foundation argues that the drug classification system:
    •  is based upon the false assumptions underlying historical prohibition of specific drugs rather than evidence of the efficacy of the classification system at reducing drug harms
    •  is not predicated on a framework that enables policy makers to make decisions about how to classify drugs - as no meaningful indicators exist to measure effectiveness
    •  is neither strategically planned nor effectively reviewed and evaluated against meaningful indicators
    •  is compartmentalised and not subject to cross-departmental review
That government risk assessment regarding drugs is:
    •  inconsistent, frequently ignoring expert advice both internal and external
    •  driven by uninformed media coverage and non-scientific government disinformation based around the demonisation of illegal drugs rather than their inherent dangers.
That the Advisory Council's decision-making process is not transparent, is politically constrained, is ministerially determined, and has failed to advise on the most important policy issues.
That there is a distinct lack of publicly funded research in key policy areas because of the reticence of policy-makers to expose policy failings.
That successive Governments have sought to hype the dangers of illicit drugs rather than communicate scientific advice effectively.
That the result of the above is a drug classification system that fails to deliver on its policy objectives and underpins a wider drug policy that increases drug harms rather than decreasing them.

For this reason, the SLF believes that our best defense of saving magic mushrooms comes NOT from trying to campaign for the law to be changed specifically for magic mushrooms, but rather that the entire system of drugs classification (of which mushrooms are just a part ) should be reviewed, overhauled and replaced with a system that classifies drugs on actual harm caused and risk involved, addictiveness etc.
As we see, Transform points out there are a huge range of benefits to taking a different approach to drugs legislation.  Obviously such an approach is radical in today’s terms, but if we ever want to get to grips with the problems that drugs cause in our society, then this is the only way forward.  All the War on Drugs has caused is suffering, misery and hardship to immense numbers of people, and is itself responsible for fueling much of the crime the world over. Therefore, we believe that in joining the SLF it is truly possible to make a genuine positive difference to the world with the upshot that we can genuinely achieve our brief - to liberate shrooms from Oppressive Governments.
However in order for SLFers to make a contribution and a difference in the battles ahead, then it is essential that we are armed with the correct knowledge to argue against the current system. Knowledge is power, so familiarise yourself with Transform's arguments - they are rapidly gaining a critical mass and winning new admirers daily - all we can say is their logic is sound and profound, well thought out with many far reaching, positive consequences. It truly is a New World Order that the SLF categorically supports. Fortunately Transform produced a number of documents to get us started for the critical stuff we need to know.

We also would encourage our members to if possible make a donation to the Transform cause. Click here to make a donation. And please mention that it is on the SLF's behalf. This can only help to strengthen the relationships between our two organisations. For more ways to get involved with Transform's work, click here.
Yet there is one domain where membership to the SLF is priceless - in the majestic kingdom of the Shroom, or the Magic Land. To many this place is a hallowed ground, sacred and enchanted. It is a place that truly exists, but only to shroomers. Yet no more do you have to travel to this place in isolation, on pioneering forays into the unknown. Now, when you return or venture to this new world, you'll do so as a member of the Shroom Liberation Front. There is something uniquely tantalizing about this - for now you are visiting this amazing place, under magical instruction from us, Mother Base. Now you can foray around these uncharted territories, as an SLFer, truly going where no man has gone before, but now with greater purpose and identity. You'll be amazed just what being an SLFer will bring to your experience. We encourage you to venture into this realm, to seek out and understand the great wisdom of the Shrooms, and to return, bigger, wiser, and better then before. Use your imagination - this world is only what you make it. The main thing is to have fun with your new role and identity - but please let us know of what membership of the SLF brought to your trip. From what we've heard so far, we're getting the Red Carpet treatment in the great land at the top of the high mountain.
So on that slightly bizarre note, how does one become an SLFer? We've decided that only people who truly want to be part of our cause can join - all we ask is that you take our Allegiance Declaration and email it back to us, which we will accept as your countenance of support . We have three rules associated with this Declaration - you must SAY it, MEAN it, and BE it. If you can do all three then consider yourself one of us. Welcome to the Front.
