Nice pinset, but the shrooms will be bigger if the substrate is deeper.

It's funny seeing people making jokes online in text form. Kinda hard to sift through seriousness and a joke.

I usually can tell though.

I'll have to agree with all those who said 4"'.  I've done 5-6 inches before and have seen detrimental results.  I've done 2-3 inch subs before and they do well, but not great....  4 inches has been the "Magic" number FOR ME.  That's not to say that it's the "be all end all" to bulk substrates.  In relations to the size of my tubs, four inches is PERFECT.  You have to consider the total volume that your tub has.  you can put 4 inches of substrate in a tub that is WAY TALL and there is soooooo much "empty area" above it that you HAVE TO MIST just to keep the RH at appropriate levels.  I guess I never really thought about it, but the size of my tubs allow for the 4 inches to consume almost halve of the tub.  I really don't have to mist very much...... Maybe once a day tops.  Of course, I use a casing layer which changes the variables all together.

Mist heavily before pins show, but only if your substrate looks dry/shrinking.
