Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

what do you recommend?

1"-3" anything more is a waist I believe, Trust me I have done the 4 and 5 inch subs with very little difference.
Save your spawn and make another one:thumbup:

You don't need back up this aint grade school,,,, I have been doing it this way for quite some time now with stellar results, The reason most people say to use a thicker sub is to produce more/bigger mushrooms.
In my past practice I have had very little bonus with the extra sub.

However I have found that I do get more weight with the same amount of spawn to make 5 inch subs with when used to make 2  2 1/2" tubs

To each there own Find what works for you and stick to it.

i usually do 4-5 myself

the reasons are

a deeper sub will retain more moisture
and keep RH levels up better than say a 1-2 inch sub

a deeper sub will also contain more nutes
thus giving you more flushes
over a longer period of time

also a deeper sub will hold more water which
will not require you to dunk as you would if
using a 1-2 inch sub

you will deffinitly need the extra moisture with a tub that size to keep the rh high enough.

Some pans were just cased with a three inch deep substrate layer

You're confusing casing with substrate.  You never case with a substrate material.  You want to spawn your grains or brf cakes into your substrate, which would be straw, coir, manure, etc.  Consider 3" to 4" the maximum depth.  Beyond that, things get iffy real quick.

The casing is the non-nutritious top layer you put on after the substrate has become colonized with mushroom mycelium.  Consider 1" the maximum depth of casing, but 1/2" to 3/4" is probably better yet.  I rarely use over 1/2" of casing, even with deep substrates.

Other species of interest to people here require a thin substrate and casing layer.  For example, Pan cyans rarely fruit from a substrate over 1 1/2" thick.  If you're growing those, keep your manure layer thin, and apply a very thin casing layer, such as 1/4".

im pretty sure this guys not growing pans.

By misting.  This increases RH, but if your tub is done properly ie.  dialed in then you don't need to mist

If anyone cares I have always done 4.. I have also tried 2 and 3 and 5, but around 4 seems to be the perfect number for me.

What does the length of your substrate have anything to do with yield?

A vase that stands 24 inches tall will not output mushrooms She-hulk can choke on.
