grad school problems.... issues w/ GPA
    #11292974 - 10/21/09 05:37 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

i don't know my GPA from undergrad - this shows how little i cared about grades.

i'm now thinking about grad school, but feel my chances are too low to bother applying. i graduated from a top-tier university at age 19, so i'm pretty smart and capable. but when i went to college, i said fuck it to classroom-learning and did my own thing, and justified this action with thinking i'll start my own business so i won't need grades. lots of Bs and Cs and later some Ds and one or two Fs.

do grades matter so much for grad school?

Grades do matter depending on where you want to go, if you get your masters at the same college you got your BA it doesn't really matter.

yeah, it really depends on what you're going after. if it's your Ph. D., well then, you're probably SOL. the reason for this is that the majority of Ph. D. programs are actually paid for by the university. masters programs, on the other hand, are usually paid for by yourself. you can probably get into one with a 3.0 and good recommendations.

From the different professors and advisors I've talked to, graduate schools really only look at the classes you took that are pertinent to your graduate degree (I'm planning on a neuroscience PhD after I graduate). I sure hope so because I did pretty shitty when I was in engineering, and am doing a lot better now in psychology (I'm sticking to the sciencey classes though, none of that social psych bullshit).

Need more information.  What was your undergrad in, what do you want to go to grad school for - and look up your GPA so you can actually know instead of just guessing.

If you want to go to a grad. school within the same league as your undergrad, it'd be a lot harder with blemishes on your transcript; D's and F's. I'm not saying you should rule out 1st-tier graduate schools, but you should definitely look into second-tier and third-tier schools as well. Also, what do you plan on doing in grad. school? Did you take the necessary exams, i.e. MCAT for medical school, etc.? How did you do on said exam? All of these factor into your overall appeal.

This + work experience relevant to the subject area you want to go to graduate school for.  A good personal statement telling the school why they should take you regardless of your shitty grades will work in your favor as well.  It also might be possible to do a part-time program in which you could "test the waters."  This may be helpful as the school would have less to lose in accepting you if you suck.

Again, it depends on where you want to go for graduate school. First-tier universities care about everything that needs to be considered for admission. Usually, there has to be a good balance between all factors of admission. A good score on a test shouldn't make up for a bad GPA.

"Less" is a relative concept.  I never said pwning a test would make up for GPA, I said it would decrease it's relative weight in the final analysis.

For many science-related programs, this is crucial.  In science, a grad student = cheap labor.

From the perspective of an investigator, the work is what's valuable.  If you have stellar grades, but can't publish, and can't produce data, you're basically worthless.

A good anything will help make up for a bad anything, to some extent.

In my experience there are three things that you need - good GPA, Test scores and letters of recommendation(including publications and statement).  Now how much weight is placed on each one depends not only on the school, but the particular people in the admissions committee.  And of course the better the school, the more important it is to ace all three.

Well since he got his question answered, and we're on the topic - i'll tack on a question to this thread:

How soon is "not too soon" for me to put that I'm a grad student on my resume.  I mean, i'm a TA and shit - doesn't that count?

Also, keep in mind that ultimately, if/when you apply to a postdoc and/or job, it's quite likely the first thing someone will look at is your publications (and area of expertise), followed by the lab you came out of.

For some areas, the name of the university means little.

I would say the minute you are both a)accepted and b)have a undergrad degree you are a grad student.  Is being a grad student something you want on your resume?  You work while attending grad school and TAing?
