Are these liberty caps!? Will I trip?
    #11292804 - 10/21/09 03:10 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hello,

I'm a new mushroom hunter from Dartmouth. I know very little about mushrooms other then what I learned in Amsterdam. I picked a few today and I was wondering if you could verify if any of these are liberty caps or if my friends and I will trip if we eat them!

Here are some pics:

1st Mushrooms found on the edge of the woods and field

2nd Found in backyard- grassy dirt area

3rd Found in a soccer field

Hope you can verify this for us!

Thanks so much and happy hunting.

1- Laccaria laccata
2- not sure, could be a few things - more pics - more information - better ID request
3- LBM, potentially poisonous - maybe an Inocybe

The cap color of the top 4 specimen of #2 throws me off a bit, but the one in the bottom looks like a Mycena species.

Not to forget the delicious Macrolepiota procera and the edible and equally awesome Chlorophyllum rhacodes and C. brunneum.

He is interested in tripping, not having dinner.

My post was unclear. Here we go:

White Gills = Bad (If you are looking for actives, but some white gilled species are edible if you know what you are doing)

Better?

Ah, sorry. I also thought you were speaking in general terms.
I always encourage people who are out looking for mushrooms to make them trip to also explore the other exciting aspects of mushrooms and to expand their diet to include wild mushrooms, so that's why I am opposed to a generalization like "everything with white gills is bad", even though I agree with you that this is certainly true with regards to what the OP is looking for.

I actually love mushrooms, especially with steak haha but for this purpose I am looking to get high. If anybody is familiar with mushrooms in Nova Scotia could you point me in the right direction?

Psilocybe semilanceata are what you are looking for in Nova Scotia. They are in season right now.

I understand completely, and agree with you. Even though I was responding to the OP, It easily could have been interpreted as me using that shitty generalization.

I love all fungi equally, and honestly would prefer to find Hericium erinaceus over Psilocybe cyanescens anyday.

The actives may have gotten me into mycology, but the whole world of fungi keeps me there. I am especially interested in mycoremediation and mycoforestry, and of course wild mushroom hunting. Nothing beats finding a new patch of ANYTHING.

Put your head close to the floor.. and concentrate.

IMO you haven't got any libs there. But listen to people like German Kahuna, he knows his beans.. Or his mushrooms!

I seen a lot of the top ones before, so id be glad if someone got an ID on those.

It's best to look for them where they grow.
Seriously, all joking aside, there have been dozens of threads about them during the past days, weeks, months and years, many including detailed pictures and description of habitats. Use the Shroomery search engine. The FAQ is equally helpful. If that doesn't answer your question (which it should. You won't find more information on them anywhere) then google is your friend.

don't eat anything before you get a positive ID from a trusted source. Even if you think they look like libs. Could make you very ill.
