Is Presoaking WBS Needed?
    #11292812 - 10/21/09 05:12 PM (8 years, 4 days ago)

Is the 24 hour presoak of wbs really needed to germinate endospores; because I was thinking that these will be killed in the pressure cooking process anyway. Am I correct on this?

I never do and have never had a problem.  They shells crack less if you do a soak before the simmer(ie... less starch release).  That said, it does help, but for me it's not worth the time or effort.  My WBS jars colonize and shake fine without a soak.

EDIT - Never had a contam problem without the soak... as long as jars are properly sterilized.  Germinating endospores with a soak is an exercise in abundance of caution, which we all know is never a bad thing.

Some say yes, some say it doesn't matter much.

I don't personally do it....I have, but am too impatient.

BUT, if you have the space, and the privacy and the patients, it doesn't hurt.

Also, I think the shells cracked more after I soaked and then simmered....Just my observation.

Some bacterial spores can survive a PCing, soaking germinates them making them prone to dying in the cooking cycle.

Plus the soak will aid the hydration of the grains.

Bacteria don't have spores and will always be killed in the PC if done properly.  The soaking is to germinate mold spores which after germinated are much easier to kill with high temps.  Some endospores (mold spores) can endure MUCH higher temps than bacteria. Just wanted to clarify.

Not sure if its needed if your water to wbs ratio is perfect. I presoak mostly to get the seed to become soft and full of water. I then rinse and drain and the wbs is good to load and sterilize.
I do believe germinating the endospores helps because my sterile technique sucks and I really don't even pressure cook anymore. I soak-rinse-load-steam. I would pressure cook if I still did big amounts and yeah, I'd soak but just really to get the moisture content right.
Hope that made sense.

i put my wbs in my large PC and fill it with water.

sift out anything that floats.

simmer for 20-25 minutes. (tiny bubbles) not boiling.

rinse and load into spawn bags.

i simmer on very low for 35 min, no bubbles, just very hot water, drain quickly and load grain into jars and PC for 2 hours.

:pm: me if you have questions about lasers

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

Also, I might add and CAN'T stress how important the rinse is when using WBS.  If you want to be able to shake your jars then don't skip the rinse after the simmer.  This is unlike RR's rye process where there is no rinse.  Rye doesn't release all that gluey starch that WBS and therefor doesn't need the rinse.  Not rinsing simmered WBS will result in a brick or huge clumps of WBS in your jar after PCing.
