Question about the environment of Cyans
    #11291981 - 10/21/09 03:04 PM (8 years, 11 months ago)

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6.

Let me first say I have read plenty of forums, and seen very helpful pictures related to this forum, so I feel I am allowed to post a forum of my own now.

I live in the PNW. I know of parks around my area and some farther out. I think my idea of parks is different from that of other successful hunters. Today I went to two places I consider parks and that have, well, shrubbery and other life. I often go into the wild or off course, if you will, into bushes and small tree areas.

Pictures 1 - 5 are the grounds I usually end up finding myself on top of. I consider these grounds dirty lifeless soil! But what lead me there is these trusty looking plants (rhododendrons and likewise).

I've seen pictures of the correct grounds cyans grow in, and they look very similar to mine except there are some woodchips around these plants (sometimes I can't even see any woodchips). I know woodchips and shrubbery are a good place to start however, picture 6 is a generic imagine I found online that looks similar to what I find at these parks. I only find woodchips at the kids play area. I go into the bushy area and again I'm on dirty, or light grass, sometimes rocks.

Are these alder wood chips not being used anymore for general landscaping? One of these parks I went to is generally maintained (even with sprinklers) but I only see alder (or light) woodchips at the kids area.

I am not asking specific names of places, but perhaps, a clarification of these parks that I should look at, as apposed to these muddy swampy trail zones I'm spending time in.

Thanks.

alder woodchips aren't the only thing they grow out of. i've had great success looking around play grounds. i'm in the bay though.

Ok thanks. Everyday I keep applying what I learned from the day before. I'll try grassy places tomorrow.

Look in wood chip landscaping around bushes.  Look deep into the bush, not just around it.  You will need to look at a few hundred bushes before you find any.  Maybe thousands.  Start early in the morning and hunt until its too dark to see.

i've seen them colonize grass roots. i say you should just look everywhere and develop a 'feel' for the habitat.

I'm having enough trouble finding spots to even bother checking bigger than maybe 60 square feet that include: chips, medium sized plants (almost always not big bushes where you can literally go in them).

always finding dumpy dinky spots with mini plants. Finding bigger bushes but without chips, just soil and old leaf debris.
