It's hard to use a microwave to get something to 160-170F for an hour.

Seems as if you'd get more of a partial sterilization than pasteurization. The microwave is more convenient for EVERYONE here I'm sure, but there's a reason most opt for other methods.

For tiny amounts, it's better than nothing. But it won't give consistently good results. Unless you have a fancy programmable microwave? With an internal thermometer? That might work.

You can calculate the microwaves power output to grains on low settings, the temp rise and maintenance will be proportional to the amount of stuff to be heated.
e.g. on a low setting you might be able to maintain a litre of water at 160F, any more and it will cool, and less and it will heat to high. I have done it.

I've done it a couple of time, and had no major issue. I do agree that conventional pasteurization teks are more effective.
