Why gravel?
    #11288267 - 10/20/09 11:53 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I'm not so sure that this is an ID request as much as it is a general question...

In my outings I often come across these guys growing in gravel (mainly gravel driveways).  Anyone have a clue as to why they love gravel so much?  Or...  Is it just a coincidence that the gravel has been laid over a substrate they like?
For shits and giggles I actually dug into a driveway where I found these growing and the gravel was probably damn near a full foot deep, yet they shrooms were still growing in it.  Any ideas?

Laters!

Coprinus comatus likes disturbed habitats.

I'm assuming that by 'disturbed' you don't mean 'strange', but instead...  Habitats that have been 'shaken up' a bit.  Yes?
Thanks, Alan!

"For some reason "shags" seem to gravitate toward asphalt and often burst up through it.  They've been known to ruin tennis courts, and one is reported to have lifted a 10 pound slab of concrete in a heroic attempt to proliferate its species."
