What Watt for the Heat Bomb?
    #11287406 - 10/20/09 08:34 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Hey everyone out in this big old world.I got myself a 25 watt Submersible Heater for 8 bucks at the flea market this past weekend.Do you think it will be enough wattage for an incubation tub floating in another tub or the Heat Bomb (inside a Gator aid Bottle)?

You don't need to incubate. It's old information. Room temp is good. If anything put it in the cabinet above the fridge, mine stays a solid 77-79 degree which is the max temp you want. TiT incubator are flaky and hard to control the temps. People have 'cooked' their jars by using these things. Room temp, or above the fridge is best IMO.

I tried a heatbomb once with a 50w heater inside a 1 galon plastic jug.  it failed to change the temp in a 120qt tub.

I'm not sure if it was the heater unit itself or the concept that is flawed. I ended up throwing out the heater, because I had it sealed  in the jug very good.

Its in the low 60's where I store my jars/colonizing trays now, and I want to give a TiT a try, but am afraid of wasting money on another heater only to have the chance of it failing again.

sorry I couldn't help you decide.  I just wanted to add my frustrations with a previous attempt of the heatbomb theory.

If room temp is good will it slow colonization?Room temp is like 77-78 I have read "Incubate at 86 deg" in al of my research thus far.

I had built a heatbomb not long ago and was dissapointed to say the least. I had a 200 or 300w heater had minimal change in temps. If your the type of grower that likes to take at look at your jars then this just isnt a good method. For the heatbomb to work it will slowely rise the temp of its surrounding area over the course of approx a day (give or take a bit) for it to stay at that temp you really cannot be looking at it or else all that heat will escape and your back to square one.

If your getting a fish tank heater then you might as well do the better thing and just build a small TiT if your keen on incubating

OK if INCUBATING is not the best way to grow Mycelium what is the temp needed to grow?

Room temp is fine. When using an incubator it will just go slightly faster but you have a higher risk of contams

Man thanks for the info guys.I'm going to go through with it at room temp.Does the Humidity in the fruiting chamber still have to be high and the fruiting temp go down another 10 degrees before they start to fruit?

The humidity still has to be 99-100%. You can colonize at room temp around 75, and also fruit aswell at the temp no need to drop temps for fruiting

Keep it all around room temp as much as you can and keep your RH around 100%

I thought of using the 50/50 tek with my casing(verm/peat moss)what would be the best casing layer(in measurements)? And if I used the Mono tub tek would this still work the same as casing and still be able to keep the humidity up high?

Measurements for a casing lay depends on how much or size your doing. Its always 50%Verm and 50%Peatmoss plus a buffer.

You dont have to case a monotub at all its really up to you if you want to or not

Then I would incubate. But I wouldn't make a heatbomb; make a proper tub-in-tub (TiT). Be sure to test it and get the temperature stable before you put your jars in. 75-79F is good.

Cheers.
