birdseed soak, how long is to long??? help
    #11287546 - 10/20/09 10:47 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

soaking seed for 24 hrs is a ok, now i recently soaked a little to much (ran out of jars) and have to wait another 8-12 hrs before i can get back to the seed. question, how long is to long? and whats the best course of action here if its not to late? should i keep the seed submerged, or should i go ahead and strain?

keep it soaking, if you strain it and leave it in open air, it will have a greater chance to contaminate..  as long as it doesn't turn too mushy you should be fine with a 36 hour soak.

if its too mushy just start over, hopefully you can get more easily.

Don't soak for over 24 hours.  If you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO.... It's no big deal.  It wont get mushy, so don't worry about that.  Also, don't worry about it getting contaminated..... IT ALREADY IS!  That is why you soaked it to begin with right?  To germinate the bacterial endospores.  Doesn't matter how contaminated it is..... You're going to sterilize it while you Pressure Cook anyways.

A good rinse after soaking will wash off a lot of those nasties before they even make it to your PC.

previously I prepared two extra quarts of rye berries.  I PC'd 8 quarts and left the other two quarts with their lids off; these two quarts were 24 hour soaked and 10 min boiled.

about 24 hours later I noticed a cottony growth in the bottom of the jars so I immediately put sealed lids on the jars. and the growth stopped and turned black on the upward half of the growth.

so Yea... If I had grains already soaking for 24 hours, I would rather leave them soak the additional 12 hours, rather than have them in open air.
