More West Sound cyanescens (w/pix)
    #1128653 - 12/10/02 11:31 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

A lucky day yesterday... nice find in a patch of alder chips. These are lighter than some of the others I've found.. more yellowy-orange. The chips were relatively fresh vs. decomposed so perhaps tannins or other factors affected the color?

Spore print shows chocolate/purple and many (but not all) show dark blueing on the stems. Again a few meaty ones with lots of small ones too.. six paper plates worth!

Some meaty ones.. bit fuzzy pic:

Close up of one of the bigger ones:

Here you can see how dark the spore print is.. looks good right?:

Last but not least.. a bit of a close up.. slightly overexposed... shows the colors well:

With the rain perhaps our season will be extended??

Peace all!

Pics aren't working bro.  About the season, I found a new patch in full fruit yesterday, a nice harvest of mature specimens and new pins coming up all over, also scored some nice specimens at a couple of my old standby patches this morning (also still pinning), so I think we have a fair amount of time left before they peter out on us  .

Anno:

Thanks for copying my post.. it seems that when I create a post with attachments in Opera web browser the pix don't post properly.. when I use Explorer they do... weird..... thanks again...

The rain I think is going to be very valuable to us hunters.. I'm seeing appearances in otherwise dry beds

I'm sticking to my side of the Sound though.. you guys in Ballard, Fremont & Seattle have too much competition hehehehehehe!!!

I will say I have seen some dream spots over there.. but picked to the bone!

What do you think of the yellow color etc.. you see this often?

Peace again from Roger!

Are you sure all those are cyans.  The pix were kind of dark but the coloring seems wrong and I'm not seeing to much wavy shape.  I've picked many cyans that are fresh, dry and with much difference in colors and formations but something seems wrong here.  Probably just the pics, or my monitor, if so then nice find.

@cro:

I'm being careful with these to make doubly sure. Most were picked yound, so the caps didn't have a chance to form the upturned wavy pattern. The larger ones did have waves, but lost their "curl" during the day they were in transit.

Spore print matches my past 'certified' finds.. no rust colored spores so far..

I'll be watching for blue tinges during drying.. if it ain't kosher into the waste basket!

But leading indicators are good

Hrmm, I'll second that, those definitely look kinda sketchy to me too.  They don't seem to show the hygrophanous fading I see in my collections, the color is off and the caps look textured in some of the pics.  Psilocybe means "bald head" in latin, referring to the smooth, slippery cap surface.  Check for a separable pellicle too if you have any fresh ones around.  Also, I've never seen a cyan print that could be mistaken for chocolate brown colored, they all print a very obvious purple in my experience.  Like @cro said, it could just be the pics, but be careful man....

No worries carboard and good call Dethhed and @cro....

I was worried about the color of these mushrooms from the start. While the habitat seemed perfect, and the stems whiteish, the caps seemed too orange to match up to cyans.

The spore test showed a chocolate/brownish color.. not rust/brown as you'd expect with Galerina.. I was hoping that it would turn out a shade closer to purple.. but it didn't.

I did a swab test of cyans spores vs. these shrooms. While the shrooms in question still showed a darkish chocolate on the swab, the cyans were distinctly near black.. a noticable difference. The hue of the spore print from the cyans is distinctly purple and while close, is not a match to these shrooms.

I'm very careful with questionable shrooms, and while I was hopeful that things would turn in favor of cyans.. these are not cyans :frown:  :frown:

I DEEPLY apprecaite the cross check which is why I posted this particular batch. Thanks.. and hopefully the next batch will be a bullseye!

I'm tempted to delete this thread but then again perhaps its useful for educational purposes if anyone else runs across these confusing specimens.

Sorry for the false alarm all!

Peace.

yesterday and today i went hunting. i found hundreds of them. literally. if you break the stems in half they will be kinda tanbark colored in the middle of the stem. also there was tanbark color near the base of the stem. true with yours?

Yes. Exactly. And to make matters worse they "blue".. well really dark brown but in low light looks similar to cyans...

Sneaky bastards...

Close but no cigar...

A clear example of why a spore test should be part of every batch test for safety.

Peace!
