Holy semilanceata Batman!! PNW Central Oregon Coast
    #11286279 - 10/20/09 08:21 PM (8 years, 20 hours ago)

This is not an actual ID request been checking this field out for the past couple of months waiting i see a herd of 20+ elk frequent this field and knew it was going to be a great place to keep an eye on. every 5 feet i would find a small patch until bam the mother load couldn't take a step without almost walking on them. only found 3 other species inhabiting this field Pan. subbs/foes and two different coprinus sp. The liberties where prolific i only stopped picking because i was tired and ready for dinner. left 100's of pins to keep the supply coming!!

It seems you guys in the PNW, Oregon, Washington, BC have been blessed. I'm seeing Liberty Caps in posts from all over that place. In the North East it appears we have nothing but garbage, especially in NJ (pun intended).

Very Nice! Libs are still one of the mushrooms that  I have a hard time finding. I have access to a few great fields but still have only found them one time. Still on the look out for the money spot.

I didn't know that libs grow in elk droppings.. I live on the south coast of Oregon and right by my house is a partially wooded and partially clear cut forest, where elk often pass through.

Gonna go up and take a look today, I've never found Semilanceata before

Libs grow in grass, not in elk droppings.

It might help to have elk around though.

Yep only in grass, i am not totally sure but i believe the passing of the spores through the digestive track of an herbivorous animal ie. sheep cow elk helps activate the spores.

i did find some mushrooms growing out of the elk dung that were likely candidates for panaeolus subbalteatus only 2-3 specimen, but the bag i collected them in got smashed into my pocket and I forgot about in the foray of picking the libs and i was not able to spore print them for ID.

I found my first p. cyanescens today growing on the beach in beach grass (Not the wide flat grass but the round skinny stuff believe its call saw grass) picked 21 mature caps and left at least that many pins. i will post pics and a proper id in another thread later tonight.

There are some extremely rare mushrooms in Panaeolus that only grow from elk dung.

i talked with a few old pickers retired from there days and they said this field used to produce thousands of liberties every season until one year they just didn't show up so they stopped checking this spot. they blamed it on the farmer saying he must have sprayed the fields, but i believe they where not sustainably picking and over picked the fields.

I did not mention that i was going to pick this field or even that i knew where it was before they told me. i found it of my own accord and hope to keep it to just me picking it. thanks to lack of over harvest this field has brought itself back to life!!
