Is it normal to be so paranoid about WBS moisture
    #11284497 - 10/20/09 04:06 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I have never used bags before and have given away all my mason jars.....Now I am soaking, simmering, and straining this wbs like there is no tomorrow.  Trying to knock out twenty pounds a day for a good kick start.  Hand test, spoon test, wang test.....What happened to the old days of adding your water and your grain and pc'ing it at 15  for 90 minutes?  Any hints, tips, vulgar words, etc are appreciated.  Thanks again, LL78      Sorry for the rant...It's just not like I can go bitch to my neighbor about wet grain

You can hand dry the outside of the WBS by laying it out on paper towels and going over the grain with one a few times. Saves me a lot of time.

Damn, 20 lbs?

I actually just PC'ed 3 filter patch bags that I fitted with lids for g2g later.
That was 10 pounds of WBS right there, and all in one PC run, so I guess 20 wouldn't be all that bad.

lay grain out on paper towls or screen and when they feel dry you are good. the grains will have moisture in them from simmering and in bags you i go for the least amount of water on the outside. sometimes even put verm in there to be sure

Its easier to do bird seed then people think.

1 Grab a pot pour in your seed as needed. Use hot tap water for the soak. this will germ your spores. so noo simmer.
2 Soak for 12-18 hours or so. I do mine before bed and finish in the morning
3 strain: leave in strainer for 5 mins to drain shake out water a couple times.
4 Load your bag/jar and pc 60-90 mins

I think people have trouble with moister because of how they cook it. The easiest way NOT to do this is find the sweet spot on the stove. Don't start the stove on high lil past medium tell it gets going bobble/gauge. Then turn the stove down tell your pressure drops. There's your sweet spot. Give it enough heat to do the job but keep it as low as you can. No over kill this is where people have problems

I don't know about you, but I find simmering helps the grains to hold more water.

My grains expand after soaking alone, and probably are hydrated well, but not at optimal moisture content.

If you simmer following soaking the grains will retain that extra moisture needed.

I've been PCing at 20 psi lately, grains still come out the same.

my tek is even EASIER

no soak

simmer bird seed on low for 35 min
rinse the hell out of it with how water.

do a quick strain and shake, load jars and PC for 2 hours..

works every time..

We've all got our different ways.

2 hrs for jars?

I just did a 2 hr run for 3 large bags and I thought that was overkill.

well the reason i PC so long is that i do not soak.. nor do i dry off the grain..

the high temps at extended periods kill the contams and force the excess moisture to be absorbed, or evaporate.

I keep saying this but RR's Grain Tek is the shit. I just did five quarts of WBS. The grains get fully saturated and no more. I usually cool in the PC overnight, but with this batch they were still warm. I was concerned at first because I saw condensation, but this must have been due to the temperature gradient, because after they had fully cooled, they looked bone dry. In other words, perfection.  Because his tek incorporates a soak, you also allow the endospores to germinate, which makes the sterilization all that more effective.  Personally, I see no reason to do it any other way.

The biggest key to the right moisture content with this tek is in the straining immediately after simmering, and no rinse. Pour the hot grains into the strainer and let them steam off. Toss them around a bit and give them enough time to look dry.

Perfect.
