All of those options imply that there is a "we" after we die.

I greatly take issue with your usage of the word "forget." It implies that there's someone to do the forgetting, which is not remotely what I believe.

It seems to me that the simplest and most reasonable description of what happens to us when we die (not "after") is that we cease to exist.
That's what death IS -- it's the cessation of the accumulated biological processes which are an organism.

My beliefs are always changing - at the moment from listening to the Tibetan Book of the Dead and literature on Buddhism I'm considering the possibility that the unconscious takes over completely and we unknowingly subject ourselves to another rebirth because we are attached to pleasure

Actually, the term 'death' is synonymous with the term 'life'. :whatever:

Ehhh ... death is the other side of the coin.
Death is implied by life and vice-versa, but that doesn't mean they're identical.

Communication difficulties arise when two or more people have not agreed to the words being exchange.

Forget, did imply that someone was forgetting but only for you. In the context of that meaning of forget, I would have to agree with the contradiction you found in my poll.

However, the reality of my 'forget' was reflective of a type of amnesia. Amnesia being, not knowing that your memory has been erased, not being at all concious of your past and previous desired future.

This might clear it up, unless the words get all tangled again.

Actually weren't monocellular creatures theoritically immortal?
Like HeLa, or some small jellyfishes and such.

You mean single-cell organisms? No, they can die; at least that's what my 10th grade biology teacher told me.

Immortality is paradoxical; one of the qualities of a living being is that it dies, so it follows that if something is "immortal", it was never alive in the first place.

I guess those small jellyfishes were alive, they just don't die of old age (but they do die when smashed into bits).

Immortality is paradoxical; one of the qualities of a living being is that it dies, so it follows that if something is "immortal", it was never alive in the first place.

If its replicating DNA to sustain itself, even non depreciating/mutating, and if other than starvation, severe injury, or radiation, it won't die. I would probably call it both alive and immortal.

Though, If one considers immortal to be exclusive of those routes of death, then i guess upon that definition it would have to be paradoxical and not of matter (or known matter) - because much  can be broken. Diamonds can be cut, radiation breaks bonds in matter, particles can be smashed into each other...

I do agree that for something to 'die' it had to be alive in the first place.
in current understanding of life, as laserpig said about death:

it's the cessation of the accumulated biological processes which are an organism.

Immortal, def: not subject to death.

Even the organism you just described is still subject to death. Perhaps it does not have any particular age at which it will die in the same way that we do, but it nonetheless cannot live indefinitely.

I don't have the slightest clue.  I'm assuming that consciousness and self awareness cease with the cease of metabolism, but i guess i will have to die to find out.
