Talk me into or out of casing my 6qt tray.
    #11283842 - 10/20/09 02:25 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

I have a 6qt tray of Huatla that has been 100% colonized for about 2 days now.  Yesterday I peeked and I can just start to see the myc trying to climb up the trash bag liner I have in there.

Casing is optional, I know.  But most of the beautiful flushes seem to have casing layer applied.

I am considering 50/50 sphagnum peat moss, and vermiculite.

the tray is 2qt colonized Rye Berries + about 3qt of (8:1:1)coir/dehydrated poop/gypsum.  This will be going into a shotgun terrarium.

OK whats the question? should you case? well it can help give a better pin set, but other than that not much use for it if the conditions are right in your FC

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

my question is that I can't decide what I want to do.

IN a way I feel I want to case because the RH in my room is kinda low ~30%, this indirectly effects my shotgun RH%  at least that's what has happened while growing my BRF cakes.  But, I am ordering a humidifier, hopefully that will keep the shotgun steady.

right now I am having to make sure I keep an eye on RH.  when it drops to about 80% I've just misted the walls.  the perlite seems a little dry, but I also mist that.

I've only noticed the RH problem since outside temps have dropped and the furnace has been in use.

I have 4" or perlite in the shotgun.  1/4" holes ever 2" all six sides.  the bottom is elevated with an old coke bottle crate, its not solid so it is allowing air underneath.

part of me wants to case to provide the environment casing gives to the mycelium, but part of me don't want to fuck up this tray. I finally got the moisture content right, my past bulk trays I've messed up in field capacity after pasturing.

If adding a humidifier to my flat helps maintain RH a little better, the problem will be solved.  but, the tray is about ready for the next step, whether I case it and incubate it for another three days until the myc grows through, or I don't case and just put the tray as is into my shotgun FC.

where the FC is(near an outside wall), my room temps avg mid 60's

Thanks for the first hand experience of my similar concern.  I will just go ahead and case, and if the humidifier helps, that will just be a bonus.

I would definitely not mind waiting an extra few days to a week the casing may take to be penetrated.  Especially if it will help the 8 weeks already invested in this tray.

From your experience of RH problems during the winter, at least I know I was on the right track with my thinking..

now, I just hope I get the moisture content of the casing right..lol
