well, dung always smells strongly like a dung when it is wet. perhaps its over-moisted?
i have worked only with cow-dung though, so my opinion may be crap.

Should have waited until it was dry. Horse dung smells like really good soil when it is prepared right.

well a friend of mine mentioned that he found a bunch of fresh poo..green and smelly..strait from tha horses butt..hmmmm..but due to the rainy weather and impatience, he put a tray of it in the oven at 170ish for a couple(2) hours..he got bored and impatient, as it wasn't really drying out, and was being quite smelly..so he removed the still wet poo from the oven, and threw it in a pillow case in a pot of warm water for a few(20) minutes, kneaded it like bread, hoping to "leech" out any apperant not-so-goodies(urine, ect.), then removed the pillowcase, and SQUEEEEZED a lot, thru tha crap in a dish pan, and accidentily dropped a quart jar into it at about 1:10 ratio..well less than a couple weeks later, and he says it's turned all white and stuff, actin all rhizo like he's never seen, so i dunno..try it and see..maybe he was just lucky..i dunno..fresh dung is not supposed to work, so i don't know if it was the oven or the water bath that allowed this fresh dung to turn white, but something worked..so who knows..
..if ya wanna dry it though, i think he's had good luck drying it with a box fan on a tarp for a day or two in a spare room with an open window...break it all up though for quicker drying..kinda makes yur place smell like a barn though ..ah..country livin'..in tha city..
..i'll see if i can get him to run some more tests..peace..

Hpoo at nearly any point can be turned into a good sub. I use fresh Hpoo in my compost, it works great. The key is composting instead of rotting. If you take your time with it--- mix Hpoo with some wheat straw and a little bit of garden compost(just for the bacteria) give it 'bout a month to cook you could end up with a great substrate. I have 3-55gallon barrels full of composted and composting Hpoo made just for growing 'shrooms.
