One of my 2 liter cakes is pinning... and questions.
    #11282621 - 10/20/09 10:16 AM (8 years, 2 days ago)

Half pint PF Tek jar, 2 pins, I thought it was a dud from birthing I missed, but its gotten almost twice its size overnight, still very small

Both pins are on opposite sides of the cake at the base....

I wish I had some batteries I have so many questions about my fruiting chamber and stuff....

A few of them look like frosted on the sides, some look like they have rhizo rope hands on them about a half inch across, some have little myc peaks forming, one has a dark gray spot, and my light seems weak....

But I got a couple pins !!! And a few dryed shrooms from the birthing lol, 15 tiny tiny intrivo pins, largest is about an inch

okay good news I did a voodoo magic trick I know and got 3 pictures out of a couple of dead batteries...

The upside down box is edged with plastic wrap and has some large holes in it.... its my fix for no clear lids....

My questions are what the stuff im seeing is, looks like fresh snow on the cakes, and looks like whipped peaks of frosting or something, really tiny though... what is this?

And is my light enough, or do I need more... ? Im working on getting a new lamp to put some reveals in...

you shouldnt necessarily remove all the invitro pins after birth. thats your first flush.
we dont need pictures. sounds like you got some pins. well done.

its called mycellium. it will sometimes continue to grow even after the birthing. its normal.
what type of bulb is in that light fixture?

The light is most likely not correct, I have 2 reveal lights to put into a lamp I got but the lamp ended up being type B bulbs or w/e and they dont fit...

The light on my FC is a reptile light, puts off very little heat, and is the closest thing to a white light I have.

Yeah I screwed that up, didnt think about it while I was doing it... I removed most of it and flipped the cake over into that container, basicly putting the colonized sub on top of the perlite instead of the other way around.... It grew a pin that got trapped under the perlite earlyer on... Just gonna leave it alone from now on..

Yes, I did. If I could take another picture id show you guys the 1 inch pin on it too... maybe you can see it... top left of the smaller portion of the tray... basicly wedged down in the 3 way split, ive moved a piece of it so that shroom can grow unblocked...

In what way

those 2 cakes were pinning in the jars, so i didnt dunk them, i made 2 liters out of them, i planned on taking them out for the 5 cakes that i dunked, instead i cleaned out an old plexibox and just left the 2 liters in there

i am not doc.
im just thrown offsides a bit by all of your strange systems you got going here.
i have heard of people throwing a little bit of perlite into their casing mix but never using just perlite. i dont think thats a good idea.

yeah just noticed doc didnt quote me, heh

What part of it are you thrown off about because, the 5 cakes are setup exactly like PF tek setup, straight perlite...

The 2 in the bottles are just perlite foil and cakes, I was under the impression that it would work out fine, and so far is...

The 1 crumbled was cased on straight perlite, this is my first grow and I dont know what differences there are between perlite and vermiculite, and had a bunch of perlite I cleaned in front of me, I cased it about an inch and noticed a shroom the next day... it seemed trapped so I dumped off as much as the perlite as posible and flipped the cake parts into a new tray so the perlite would be on the bottom, what little bit is left...

If that doesnt answer your question then your gonna have to ask it a different way...

i would ditch the bottles ad pour the perlite directly on the bottom of your fc. 2 liters are for if you have no fc for them. perlite is for humidity and verm is for holding moisture to your cakes and creating a micro-climate.

you should also take the crumbled cake off of the perlite ad case it in the tupperware container with verm use the perlite for the bottom of your fc. set the tupperware on that.

everything is fine except the perlite casing.
use vermiculite instead. or a mix of vermiculite/peat moss.
verm holds moisture because it is very absorbent..and helps keep a good lil microclimate.
perlite is only good for humidification purposes. i has a lot of surface area releases moisture into the air.

even though some people dont incubate after adding a casing layer.....
just for future reference-when you crumble and case your substrate it is best to incubate it for about a week or so before you put it into the fruiting chamber.
you want give the mycellium some time to reestablish itself and then break through the casing layer.
search this site on how to case.

ive read how to case and I know the myc has to overgrow the case, didnt know perlite, a high surface area substance, used to hold water was different from vermiculite, another high surface area substance used to hold water...
