Mushifier-The Mushroom Identifier * 1
    #11282377 - 10/20/09 06:26 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

mods, feel free to move this if its in the wrong category. didnt know where else to put it

READ JUST THE RED IF YOURE LAZY

so a couple days ago i ran across some mushrooms, had no idea what species they were, but decided to pick them and try to identify them. the first thing that came to my mind when trying to identify my mushrooms was "google for a web based identifier." nothing was to be found and i spent a lot of time going through online resources, looking at pictures and reading descriptions of mushrooms until i found what was the closest match to what i had. i came to the conclusion they were pan cyans. wasnt 100% sure, as this is all new to me, so i came here with some pictures and descriptions and as it turned out i was correct. thanks shroomery.org

anyways, since no such thing as a web based mushroom identifier exists, i decided to make one myself to greatly simplify the task of identification. i needed a new project to keep me busy anyways. basically you go down the list and select what pertains to the mushroom you are trying to identify and hit submit. the output will be an image and a description of any mushroom that matches the specific criteria. now i know this wont be a 100% accurate, thats why i still advise to come here and have it ID'ed by a trusted identifier.

soooooo i came up with the outline which is attached at the bottom of this post

ill begin with psylocybin active mushrooms first, and expand to poisonous and maybe edible as well.

so, shroomers, what am i missing for a proper identification? what should i add? what should i remove?

any help is GREATLY and TRUTHFULLY appreciated on this project

if any one is wondering, ill most likely be writing this in PHP

Like this?

I know, mycokey isn't finished (at least the online version isn't, don't know about the downloadable one), but the idea is there.

I didn't mean to discourage you with that, I still think it's a very good idea.
I'd really like to see something better than mycokey's MMI, and nevermind the fancy design, because what it has in eyecandy it lacks in completeness. Something like that would be immensely helpful for beginners. It wouldn't need to be able to key every last known mushroom down to species, but a lot of people would be grateful if they had something like that which was helpful in determining at least what genus they are looking at while at the same time being easy to operate.

I would like to have a mushroom database in an excel spreadsheet, easy to autofilter the list to say, black spores, and keep drilling down based on other standardized characteristics, free gills, size, whatever, then your list of possible matches is narrowed, and you can add your own google images search link column, tag your own finds in one way or other, or whatever you want.

Oh, and, every single mushroom in the world has to be on it...multilingual (including 'mycospeak' just as a token curiosity)

@German Kahuna
thanks for the support. while laying in bed last night i reconsidered my decision to scrap this project. i need something to do, so im making it even though something like it exists.

@whoever
my Mushifier, as i have titled it,  stores its content in a mysql database. once the database is somewhat filled, id be more than happy to export it for you in a .xls (excel spreadsheet file). ill even provide a link on my site so people can pull the latest database to there computer.

ill be sure to include every single mushroom in the world including all the undiscovered ones just for you.

---------

work has already begun and i have a working submission form and semi-working identification form. ill be back with updates

I have a database of Psilocybin Mushrooms, it's likely structured way different than yours but it might give you some ideas. PM me if you'd like it.

the mushroom submission form is done and working and the identification form is half way there. i kinda got carried away with the design and strayed away from the important part, the programming.

but ive been busy the past couple days with my job and havent had a chance to touch the project. should have some free time coming up this week so ill get back to work on it.
