great macro shots, bobzimmer.
stinkhorns are a weird group of mushrooms. here we see alot of the red ones with a brown muddy tip.

I think that stinkhorn is Phallus impudicus. And the red ones are "devils dipsticks" or dog stinkhorns(i guess cause they look like a prick) which are Mutinus elegans.

Slugs are more likely the cause of your woes. I fucking hate those slimy little bastards. Snakes on the other hand, are carnivorous, and won't eat yr boomers. Some of them might eat slugs though.

Didn't eat the blewits...I tried to make a couple prints, and that didn't work either. They don't smell particularly fragrant at this spot. Maybe cause of the cedar trees? There's a bunch of small ones there so I might go back for them...the stink horns are close by. The first stink horn I found was a little one inch tall Mutinus sp. These were a much bigger species. I'd say Dictyophora duplicata, but I failed to observe the "skirt". I should go back and see how the one in the first pic opened up.
