New Jersey Mushrooms Oct. 18&19
    #11279080 - 10/19/09 08:05 PM (8 years, 8 months ago)

All found in central New Jersey.

#1

Habitat:
Hardwood stump.

Pores:
About 1 per mm. Small black bugs growing inside of them (as I found to my dismay the next day). Run down the stem.

Stem:
6cm long. Wood-like.

Cap:
10cm long. Smells like fresh cucumber when cut.

Spore print color:
White

#2

On rotting hardwood log. 1.5cm cap. Gills a lighter shade of the cap and attached to the stem. Stem 1.5cm long and snaps easily. Couldn't get a spore print.

#3

Habitat:
About 6 feet high in the knot of a standing dead hardwood.

Stem:
5cm long and solid. Top of stem with a ring.

Cap:
7cm long.

Spore print color:
Rusty brown.

#4

Found on a hardwood log. Tiny white pores underneath, about 6 per mm. Cap 10cm. A hard stem that is 3.5cm. Smells like oatmeal. Couldn't get a spore print.

#5

Habitat:
Fallen hardwood tree.

Gills:
White. Runs down the small stem a bit.

Cap:
17 cm long.

Spore print color:
White.

#6

Habitat:
Found on soil covered with leaves near a stream. May have been on buried wood, though.

Gills:
White and forked. Adnexed.

Stem:
12cm long. ~1cm long white ring at the top. Mycelia attached to last 3cm of the stem.

Cap:
2cm. Conical-convex. Brown at the top, then gradually fades to white at the margin. Translucent. Vertical lines running down from the top of the cap to the margin.

Spore print color:
White (This is the first time I used aluminum foil for this and I must say that it is much better than paper).

My guesses...
#1: polyporus varius

#3: Pholiota. Seems very similar to the one I found on my last thread, despite being significantly larger.

#5 Pleurotus ostreatus

#6: Mycena.

It was pretty humorous.. my friends were running around shouting that they found their third shroom while I was bent over my notebook hastily scribbling notes and labeling brown bags.
