Possible Psilocybes and Gyms
    #11278490 - 10/19/09 06:30 PM (7 years, 11 months ago)

The possible Psilocybe:

Habitat: Growing on birch wood in eastern Virginia mixed woods

Gills: off white on immature specimen, purplish brown with white edges on more mature specimen

Stem: fibrous, white to off-white, hollow but not brittle
Length, diameter, color, texture, hollow/solid, thin/thick, etc.

Cap: 1 to 3cm, caramel colored when young, fading to buff when mature, darker along margin

Spore print color: none printed, would guess purple brown based on gill color (only picked one for gill shot did not keep it)

Bruising: none observed right away, did not wait long though

The stem looked rather psilocybe-like to me but no bluing was observed, maybe an inactive psilocybe or stropharia?

The possible Gyms (likely inactive):

Habitat: Growing from pine log in eastern Virginia mixed woods

Gills: Yellow some with blotchy rust orange spore deposits

Stem: thick, hollow, sturdy, fibrous

Cap: 1 to 4cm, rusty orange when young, lightening to orange with age yellowing along margin

Spore print: none printed, guessing rusty orange based on gills

Bruising: stem bruised red orange, some caps had dark spots on them but it was hard to tell the color, looked purplish black

I tasted a piece of cap flesh and found it to be quite bitter.

1. Maybe it's a Leratiomyces sp. ? They have the look of Psilocybe to me though.

2. I guess is Gymnopilus liquiritiae. EDIT: Esp. by the described taste, location, and lack of annulus

thanks. i didn't figure the first one was active given the lack of bluing, but Gymnopilus liquiritae are active aren't they?

I merely keyed the fungus and the key nor mushroomexpert (http://www.mushroomexpert.com/gymnopilus_liquiritiae.html) mentions anything of the such to my knowledge. EDIT: Also, there is a reasonable possibility that I'm completely wrong, which would be good too.

Nice finds! Your Gym also matches Gymnopilus sapineus pretty closely.

I will confess something that should be quite obvious, CC.  I love mushrooms, i.e. fungi.  I really do.  I am talking about a strong feeling, i.e. emotion, for them.  I think they are beautiful.  I even dream of them.

The first one looks a lot like a Psilocybe but I think its actually in Psathyrella.  One difference is that Psathyrella are a lot more fragile.

The second is Gymnopilus.  They are pretty hard to ID even with a scope.  The last few I looked at I gave up on, so many confusing and contradictory microscopic features.  Maybe you can find someone that wants to look at them.  I kind of doubt it though.

It appears as though i may have jumped the gun in my post yesterday as far as the gyms are concerned.  I went back today to see if they had matured any and noticed that i had found two different species of gym. pictures 1,4,5 and 6 were growing on one log while the ones in pics 2,3 and 7 were growing on another log about ten feet away. the ones shown in 2,3, and 7 actually do have an annular zone or visible cortina remnants and a solid orange/brown cap...

while the others have a darker red orange cap with a yellow margin and no annulus

i'm fairly sure that the first ones are G. sapineus. i don't know about the second ones though. both have rusty spores and a bitter taste.

Then as i continued to walk around i stumbled across these

These i'm pretty sure (but not positive) are G. liquiritiae. They have no annulus, rusty orange spores, smell strongly of potatoes (verified by having a friend of mine take wiff without telling him what he should be smelling for) and a taste easily twice as bitter as the other specimens.  anyone have any thoughts?

here are some other random mushrooms i spotted today

i think my eyes are just playin tricks on me, but does that stem look blue to anyone else?

didn't figure, outdoors it looked kinda blue, but that mushroom doesn't look like anything that should be active.

Here are some more pics of the mushrooms i posted earlier

the spore print from these was purple/black

Some more liquiritiae pins (i think) hopefully they'll be big enough to pick and print in a few days, the weathers been kinda screwy the past couple days.

Some more unknown gym pins

anyone know what these might be. they remind of photos of ps. caerulipes i've seen on the board but these don't bruise blue when squeezed or bent, though some do have blue/green streaks on the caps, and the stems and centers of the caps are darker than what i've found before. did i find a look-a-like or a less active patch?

sorry about the shitty camera work, i was pretty stoned at the time

Those might be G. liquirtiae.  The others are not Gyms in my opinion.  Gyms, like most mushrooms, like 12-24 hours to print, provided conditions are right.
