I think I get it now. It helps for me if I think of this: 1-1/infinity=1. I guess after all these years, the concept of infinity remains as ungraspable as it was to me when I first encountered it. By my flawed logic, 1-1/infinity could have come out 0.99 recurring, not equaling 1. Somehow if I make this explicit, I find it easier to accept the reasonings in this thread.

like if u said

lim        f(x) = 1 + 1/x
x->∞

as X approaches ∞, the fraction would become almost insignificant and u could say that the limit would just be 1 cuz it wouldnt matter but it would not really = 1

What if the function approaches x=1-1/infinite? That's basically what you're saying. In my understanding 1/infinite comes out 0. Or is it 0.00 recurring, not being 0? How would that work?

May I remind you that .9 repeating is a number.  That means it has it's place on the number line somewhere.  Which means that it's not "getting" anywhere.  It doesn't move.  It either equals 1 or it doesn't (it does of course), but it doesn't "get" closer to 1.

.33rep= (1/3)
so .33rep times .33rep is (1/3)(1/3)=(1/9).  1/9 isn't close to .99rep

I don't know how to tell you this but.....

.33 x .33 = roughly .11

similarly, if you want to be exact, 1/3 x 1/3 = 1/9.

Takeru Kobayashi is the world's fastest eater. He is the top ranked eater in the world according to the 'International Federation of Competitive Eating'. He set his first record on July 4, 2001, when he ate 50 hot dogs in 12 minutes at the Nathan's Coney Island hot dog-eating contest, shattering the previous record of 25.5. The record was so unexpected that when Kobayashi got to the later numbers, the organizers ran out of signs indicating how many dogs Kobayashi had eaten and had to resort to handwritten signs. In 2002 he beat his previous record by one half of a hot dog, consuming 50.5 Nathan's famous hot dogs in 12 minutes. On July 4, 2004 he set a new record when he ate 53.5 in the same amount of time. Kobayashi has a condition called gastroptosis, an abnormal downward displacement of the stomach. It plays a role in his eating ability because his stomach is able to expand below the rib cage unlike most people, allowing him to take in large portions of food.
