Help with water pump, GPH, max head and WTF?!
    #11276517 - 10/19/09 10:52 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

OK, I am trying to help out a friend here, and I'm not sure what to tell him... I'm trying to help him size a submersible water pump for a light cooling system and it's all quite confusing!

The water chiller needs at least 800 GPH, and everything was fine until you add in "head height" and other factors which drop the pumps GPH. I'm thinking BIGGER, but then I'm scared to overpower the system and burst a pipe! PLUS, all the connections sizes are different, and I'm unsure what effect different size tubing/pipes will have.

This is some complicated shit!

Here are the basics if you think you can help, or have experience!

- 40 gallon res, with the pump inside, located 4 feet below chiller. Water needs to go up into chiller through what I assume is 1" pipe (chiller has 1" connectors).

- From chiller (which adds 6' of head I think) the water needs to go up another 2 feet, turn 90 degrees and run about 10' then turn down...

- It will then split into two 1/2" pipes carrying cold water to light chillers which have 1/2" connectors and want about 300 GPH each.

- Leaving the chillers, the now warm water meets back at a 1" pipe, travelling back up and returning 10', then turning down and dropping 6' or so back into res...

So, in all.... Is that ~12' of head height? 6 actual feet and 6' for the chiller? Will the GPH be halved when the 1" pipe splits into two 1/2" pipes? Does the drop to 1/2" add more head? Will the entire thing explode if the pump is too much?

I am thinking about an 1800 GPH pump, that has the 800+ GPH I need at 12' of head... then it'll split to about 400 GPH for each light chiller?

Thanks for any input!!

Are you talking about vertical head? Trying to pump water uphill is whats gonna slow it down. They make pumps that are specifically for higher pressure systems that have a lot of head. Not sure on how to do the calculations to be able to reduce the flow to a certain gph.

Yup... straight up to chiller, then up some more.

I'm just afraid to overpower the system and bust the lines or something...

Also, I worked in the aquarium industry for a good 8 years. These are by far the best, most durable pumps out there: http://www.marinedepot.com/powerheads_pumps_danner_mag_drive_supreme-ap.html

What kind of lines are you using? PVC? Even if it's tygon tubing it's gonna be really hard to make it burst. For the tubing-PVC connections be sure to use threaded adapters and put hose clamps on them.

Edit: I've worked with flow rates up to 5000 gph using PVC and the clear tubing that has threads running through it and we never blew any lines.

That's exactly the pump I was looking at! The MagDrive 18 seems like it'll be perfect, but there are SO MANY VARIABLES!

And the system is mostly PVC with flexible hose in some places... It's all rated beyond 200 PSI and I just realized that way beyond where I'll be.

Can you burn out a pump if it's too strong and it experiences resistance?

I've never had a Mag Drive burn out on me. And you should be fine with PVC and flexible hose, just remember to use the threaded hose-PVC adapters and hose clamps. I'd be surprised if an 1800 gph magnetically driven pump could produce more than 50 PSI, so no worries of exploding pipe.

And for your first question, going from 1" to 2x1/2" pipes shouldn't add anymore head to it, it's still 1" total diameter after all.

OK... fuck it then.

We'll hook up the 1800 and see what happens...

Thanks!
