Perlite getting waterlogged?
    #11276128 - 10/19/09 10:58 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

So I have refrained from posting a question about this cause it will fix itself sometimes but it aggrvating the PISS out of me now and im about to put a bunch of trays in so....

I have a shotgun terrarium. The RH is my FC will randomly start being really low. It will be doing fine for a couple weeks or so then all of the suddent im fighting tooth and nail just to keep this fucker at 85. I already half ruined the first tray I ever did because my FC started doing this and i started misting way too much and waterlogged my trays. This has been going on a long time, the first time it happened I was able to drain water out of the FC by tilting it and alot came out, after that it worked beautifully and stayed over 95 at all times.

Subsequent times it started doin this bullshit I didnt keep misting enough for the pearlite to get to the point where I can drain it. No water runs out when I tip it. But im still pretty positive this is from water building up inside the fc but I dont know why but I keep having this problem. This last time I am positive I am not misting excessively, the first times it was from that but not anymore. There has to be some kind of resevoir where the water is collecting in my pearlite but this cycle of bullshit is getting really fucking old.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

I had a similar issue and it turned out to be caused by perlite dust mixed with some water blocking up the holes along the bottom of the tub. The stuff can almost get like a paste.

Thanks for respnse harmless, I dont think thats what its from because every time i move the thing i got pearlite falling out everywhere. Like I said it will do this and the RH will stay low then its like it will correct itself after awhile. I dont think its from that cause i checked all the holes on the bottom I dont have perlite dust clogging them up, besides I would think that would create a lack of FAE and more humidity. Any other ideas im kind of desperate here?

going to try setting my FC tilted in the bathtub for a couple hours to drain since i couldnt get any out from just holding it up and tilting it, hopefully this will help. Has anyone else had this problem?

Depending on airflow in the room, you may be drying out your perlite.
Try rewetting it and fluffing it up, see if that helps.

Is the FC elevated to allow air flow under it?

Have you calibrated or tested the hygrometer?
