Question for fixing these WBS jars.
    #11273632 - 10/18/09 08:43 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I've been experiencing some really slow growth with some of my WBS jars, which I've previously posted about. I waited for weeks until they were 30% colonized, at which point I shook them up to begin the rush of colonization to full.

However, they aren't rushing. Instead, they have continued with their turtle's pace, creeping outwards from the mixed grain points of contact. Progress is progress, but this has been very slow going indeed. In fact, the jars were inoculated on 9/21 and they're about 60% done, perhaps 50% (hard to tell how even the myc growth is within the core).

One thing I noticed is that all of my jars tend to colonize the bottom "rung" of the jar - the outer ring circumference, first. That is the wettest part of the jar, and it leads me to believe that the rest of my grains are simply too dry on the outside. That goes against a lot of statements about WBS having to be bone-dry on the outside, but the jars are colonizing in the most wet parts first, and then slowing down to a crawl as it works its way up.

I'm considering doing a shake of some of the other jars, but am wondering if I can inject a couple CCs of distilled water to moisten things up a tad during the shake. Would that help?

what tek did you used for your WBS?

lets get more info out of him before we find out what's wrong. I agree, what tek are you using? How long did you sterilize/cook the seeds for? What are your incubation temps? If there isn't enough water, inject more. If there's visible water, loosen the cap to allow more FAE to evaporate some of it. If it's too dry, keep the lid tight.

Saying my grains are too wet doesn't make sense; the myc grew FASTER where the moisture was, around the bottom outer ring, which is where most of the spore water ended up collecting after it filtered down through the grains.

I soaked 24 hours, simmered 15, let steam dry, then sit out under a fan for a while until they slid off my hand/spoon without sticking, then PC'ed them for 90 minutes in jars w/foil over lid.

The grains passed the pinch test where you can pinch right through them without effort with your fingernail. They are 25-30% bigger in size (determined by how far they'd risen up the side of the pot they were soaking in).

My WBS process is good, but something is just damned slow in those jars. I left a test-jar out without inoculating, and it STILL hasn't contaminated yet with anything.

It can't (or rather shouldn't) be bacterial contamination that I can't see because that would have stopped the myc from recovering after I shook them.

It just seems like it might be too dry. The grains have -no- visible surface moisture at all. They look a bit dry, but I can't tell unless I have a good reference point.

The behavior is indicative of them being dry, due to the jars all similarly colonizing the areas which collected the most moisture. I want to add some distilled water, but want to be fairly sure before I do it.

usually IME when a jar is too dry it actually colonizes faster

Very confusing. Also, I'd like to mention that about a week ago I did notice condensation on the jar's interior, but now it seems like it's all gone leaving a very thin/fine filmy residue on the interior glass. Not much, but you can tell it was left by evaporation.

However the jars only have one nail sized hole for co2 exchange so I know it isnt getting too much FAE or anything like that.

Grains should have a 1/4 inch GE hole. Right now they need Gas Exchange not FAE

that could be your issue

condensation and surface moisture are BAD in grains.. the water is IN the grain

You think they don't have enough gas exchange? Or they have too much? Pardon me for not knowing the diameter of a basic screwdriver (which I hammered through the lid).

There is no surface moisture.. and I dunno what to say about the condensation. It's certainly not there anymore. It wasn't a constant thing either, I did notice it sometimes when I had the jars up under a light source where they were at higher temps.

Right now the jar temps average between 75 and 81 degrees.

I think theres not enough GE the jars are suffocating in co2

colonizing jars don't need allot of GE.. but you can try flipping them over .. smacking them .. then flipping them back and smacking them again ..

Damn. The growth was really rhizomorphic too, very ropey - just slow as hell. It was from MS, yes, but the two jars of LC that I've recently done are doing the same thing. Lots of growth around the bottom ring where the moisture collected, but slowing down a GREAT deal as it tries to reach upwards.

It's so strange and frustrating. LC is supposed to be much quicker.

Well, I'm waiting for a jar that is almost 30% to be ready for shake - I'll inject some dh2o and shake it up and see how that works.
