Huge IL Russula ID (now with pics)
    #11273941 - 10/18/09 09:24 PM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Found earlier today in a mixed deciduous forest, near oaks, on an open grassy slope growing out of the soil under leaf litter. These things are over 4 inches high, and 4 inches across, gray, slightly scaly cap, pure white fat Russula stem, gills off white with grayish speckling along the edges. Any guesses as to specific species and if it's edible? Doing a  spore print right now, doesn't seem to be taking. 3 were growing together in a cluster. I can't imagine there are too many Russula species in the Chicago area that get this large and have a gray cap.

Thoughts? Somebody has to know what this thing is.

They look like Hebeloma to me, which have a brown spore print.  You need to leave mushrooms to spore print some times as long as 24 hrs.  So don't rush it.

Any weird, pungent scent?

No discernible scent, and it's veeeerry Russala-esque. Looking at picture of Hebeloma, it is similar. Are Hebeloma native to the Midwest? Also these things have very crisp white stems.

The gill attachment is not right for Russula.

Hebeloma are fairly wide spread, they are definitely in the midwest.  Not sure about this species.

There is the possibility that it is something else, but it sure looks a lot like a huge Hebeloma to me.  The way you describe the gills of this mushroom, also fits with the genus.

The more I read about them the more I am convinced that's what they are. Very cool mushrooms. Thanks again for the ID, you are good Curecat! I'll post some more to be IDed later.

It's a Tricholoma. T. pullum is a possibility, what does it taste and smell like? (crush the flesh before you smell it)

There's really no smell and the taste is slightly peppery.

How spicy?  Spicy or peppery?  Is it actually a burn or just a flavour?

I'll stick with the T. pullum id. T.acre is very similar. plus you have the gray mild ones like T. myomyces, etc and the very acrid tasting  umbonate capped T. virgatum

Just slightly peppery, not burning peppery. Somewhat like a Chanterelle.

I think T. pullum is the winner. I tossed them yesterday, not edible as far as I can tell. Very cool mushrooms though.
