Same result when our pathetic Treasury Secretary, Tim Geither, traveled to China and had the nerve to tell them their investment in US treasuries was safe. 
Don't believe ANYTHING the mainstream financial press tells you. They are little more than cheerleaders for their corporate masters who want to talk UP the economy. If you doubt me ask yourself did they warn you that the economic crisis was coming? If not, turn that shit off.

you mean the metals? hell yes. as far as i'm concerned, if you can't touch it, you don't own it.
it's pretty well known that most of the silver and gold ETFs cant possibly have anywhere near the physical they claim to have, and if you try to make a claim on delivery of your metals, they will try to talk you out of it, and delay, delay, delay. it's quite obvious how they work.

unless you have your cash in one of the too-big-to-fails, you should be fine, although this is not necessarily the case considering 100 banks have failed so far this year. the FDIC has run out of money.
if you are invested in one of the TBTFs, i think you should transfer your money to a local bank purely out of ethical/moral principles.
if shit really hits the fan, who knows if physical paper cash will have any value left anyways.

If you have liquid cash, it doesn t hurt to have a month's worth of $$ or so in your safe deposit box instead of an account.
The interest you would get on it is next to nil. You can't invest it cause you want to have it freed up for emergencies.
Sure, its good to have a buffer of crisp tenners, twenties and fifties available for when the going gets rough.
But if you have a local brick-and-mortar coin shop nearby, it can be used to turn some metals to dollars. A coin shop as your bank.
It all depends on the swiftness of the emergencies you anticipate. Retrieving money from your box or exchanging metal for paper can take about as much time, if you have a high turnover coin shop available, or a jeweler who gives good cash for metals.
Take a gold Buffalo and a silver Eagle to your local jewelers and ask what they'd give for it.

If your dollar becomes worthless then your gonna have a lot bigger problems than selling your stashed gold. The whole of society will break down without a currency then its martial law, riots and every man for himself. The army being the biggest and most well equipped gang will tend the flock.

what is the quality of the interest your bank is currently paying on the money that is yours that they are spending? You should consider the marginal benefit of letting someone else hold your money and then decide if its proper to make a "bank run".

Thats the thing, i let them hold grands for me but i have to pay for a safe deposit box. I dont know anywhere else to keep my metals or cash. I live in an apartment that could easily be robbed.

You can get fake plug sockets that take a key, nobody would go round sticking metal keys into plug sockets!
