    #1124703 - 12/09/02 11:37 AM (21 years, 4 months ago)

so umm yeah, these little pesky biatches are flying around in both my friends moms grow rooms, what threat does pose to my friends moms, plants & mushies? how is a good way to combat them? should extra care be put into protecting cola's and mushie fruitbodies?

most likely they are fungus gnats coming from soil that is kept too moist. they won't hurt your plants unless they are real bad and that means you are keeping your soil too moist and should let it dry out before waterings. if they get real bad, the larvae in the soil may damage roots. don't know about what they might do to shrooms, but i don't think they go for that kind of fungus.

hopefully they are fungus gnats and not thrips which look similar when flying.

You can put up fly paper, available at plant stores and hardware stores i think. the little bastards will stick to it and die. Very effective, but they get nasty after a little while.

Yes try the sticky yellow pads brought in plant stores to keep numbers down.
Also avalible are soil soaks(for the colas only as i duno how
they would affect fungi)Scarid flies are there other name and "baby bio provado vine weevil killer"gets the maggots in the soil two so works a bit better.

Flies that invaded my growing area made no end of trouble. I would'nt consider them a little threat. Not for the plants, but for the fungus.

I`ve found fruit flys will appear more if the dung you get is a too moist.
Not moist in terms of too fresh but from rain for example.
They fruit flies tend to breed alot faster with damp conditions.
PC or pastuerising doesn`t get rid of the critters either.
I would suggest crumbling up your dung and leaving it to dry till bone bone dry.
My new batch of dung hasn`t got a single fruit fly in the terrarium.

Fruit flies like sweets so put some honey smeared on a bowl or something.
Sit back and watch those bastard eat their last meal. Because they stick to it.

Or get a vacum with a hose that will reach in the room without taking the vacum in there unless its a rainbow and suck those mutherfuckers up.

Yeah I hate flies and I don't hate anything else except for the following.

People that suck.
Mushrooms with contams.

They are likely not fruit flies, but fungus gnats. You can read more about them here:

If you have a "walk in" style grow chamber & see gnats inside flying around. That means MORE (gnat larva) are in any substrate you have in there.

Best bet is to use the "trash can tek" to anything they can inhabit, then clean - sterilize - everything & start over.

Best way to get rid of them -- is never get them -- in the first place. Screen everything, install an electric gnat zapper, pasturize your substrates - well.

Fr*gging fungal gnats are attracted to hot - moist dung - like a crack head -- is to crack.
