Quick Question
    #11272780 - 10/18/09 08:08 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

So i simply wanted to know if i bought 1pint jars by accident and cannot find half pint jars, if i could fill up the 1pint jars halfway with something to convert them to half pint jars. I know that it would still work with the whole 1pint jar, but after looking at and reading several topics i found with the search function, it takes much longer and it is much more prone to contam when using a 1pint jar. Not something i want. if its ridiculous tell me hehe.

Peace and love

Technically if you could find something to fill half the space thats Safe to be boiled or PC'd and holds no moisture then yea it could work. I would just get 1/2 pints online

Then you would only be able to shoot spores on the top of the cake that would take forever to colonize

okok thanks alot everyone im loving the community here. I forgot to mention this is my first grow and i dont feel i have the knowledge dash skill to start anything else than BRF following pf tek. im really newb and wanna start small but am willing to learn. So if i do the half pint recipe, put it in the 1pint jars and fill up the rest with vermiculite, should it work or this is probably a waste of time and materials?
im open to ideas

Peace and love

As long as they are not Wide mouth pints you can use them just like you would a regular 1/2 pint BRF jar...If they are Wide mouth Jars just fill them all the way leave room for you're verm layer and when they are colonized just crumble and case...They will not take that much longer to colonize granted you're sterilization procedure is good...I do agree with the whole go straight to grains but allot can be learned from BRF....I feel that BRF produces a better quality mushroom(not proven) But I feel like they share consistency in their potency(I know it's not what they eat but genetics that decides potency)...But still Moving onto Grains and spawning to a bulk Sub. Is really not that difficult..every so often I will fruit some cakes just for the hell of it!!.....e

Provo: You can use them for cakes. Yes, it takes longer and yes you do run a higher risk of contamination, but YES; you can use them.
What everyone here so far has failed to tell you is that you want to make sure that you follow the tek TO THE LETTER. And that you do everything you can to make it right. If you are new to the hobby and have not already done so: watch this video a thousand times if that's what it takes to understand it. www.mushroomvideos.com
This is the single biggest factor in making your first grows successful.
Keep in mind that you are going to have to change the ratios in order to do pint jars.
Sometimes when we get a few grows under our belts and have had our fun, we tend to forget what it's like to be new to this hobby and how exciting it can be. We may even become judgemental and think that our shit don't stink. but it does. And if it weren't for sound advice, I'm not sure any of the ones who have replied to this post would be as cool as they are.
OH YEAH, and by the way. ALWAYS be sure to look at how long someone who is giving you advice has been a member on these boards. It's in the box to the left of their post. Me, it's only been a few months. The longer someone has been a member, to me anyway; the more I would trust their advice.
Hope that this helps.

You want tapered wide-mouth half pint jars so the cakes slide out freely when they're fully colonized. If you're using pint jars their most likely not tapered and the cakes wont slide out properly.

To follow the tek correctly you need to get the proper supplies.

the length of time that someone has been a member shouldnt be your defining factor personally i have only been a member for 4 months, but have done thousands of jars

And you can't do cakes if they aren't wide mouth jars. WTF? Please explain that logic?

Wrong you want non tapered wide mouth jars. using a full pint is not recommended. It takes longer to colonize and the cake becomes compressed over time and its really hard for the bottom to colonize giving contams more of a chance.

The mouth of the jar should not be smaller then the jar it self
