Addiction, Whos to blame? Us, or the substance.
    #11270910 - 10/18/09 01:48 PM (8 years, 7 months ago)

Hello my fellow psychonauts,

Ive been browsing around the Internet a bit and stumbled across a movie, that started making me think. The movie is called nick, and its only three minutes long. But its about some great dood in highschool getting into the drug culture. I'll cut the crap. He OD's and gets massive brain damage.

To me this video would of just slipped by if it wasnt for one of the very last phrases to come across the screen. " This is the effect of drugs."

Thats what got me thinking.

Is it us, or the substance that causes addiction?

To be fairly technical about it imo We choose what we do and what we don't do. We choose how much, how often and when to do things.

SO my opinion would be us, humans.

What does the shroomery think of this?

Feel free to rant/rage your opinions, I'm interested in this particular question.

a substance can remove your self control.ive seen it happen. some people can get addicted before they know it because of genetic predisposition. but the drug doesn't say "hey try me, ingest me and ill get you super addicted". the user chooses to try it and that's their choice. if they get addicted is only as a result of the conscious decision they made to use.

i don't think addiction is really anyone's fault, though people should take responsibility for the choices they make.

if you dont reasearch what you are putting into your body, dont be surprised if the results are not what you expect (ie. dependency issues and the like)
i have reserached drugs that are notorious for being addictive, to find the reason its so easy to get hooked on em.  The information is out there, its just the "it wont happen to me" bias for most ppl and addiction, and once it happens its too late.
This is the reason i most likely wont try something like H or Crack (for a damn long time, at least)..because i have done some research and it seems that the one way to avoid an addiction is to simply not dose that first time, cuz from there its like a ticking clock (judging by the number of crack and heroin addicts) for most ppl.
no offence meant if ppl like either of those drugs, just my opinion on addiction

blame ourselves. drugs are aids for us. opiates are anesthetics, amphetamines can help morbidly obese people lose weight, psychedelics teach us(some of us) about ourselves. if you want to abuse them, they'll abuse you. if you treat them with respect, they can help a lot. drugs don't kill people, people kill themselves.

WITHOUT QUESTION the answer is US. Weak minded people become addicted. Plain and simple. I have done opiates before, plenty of yayo, and smoke cigs/dipped off and on over the years in my past. Never once did I feel the urge to have to do those traditionally addicting substances and i stopped whenever i wanted and started again. I havent done either of the three in at least 2 years i think but im not really counting.

Weed however, at certain points in college I was definitely addicted now that i look back on it, but i didnt really think so at the time. No hatred or blame towards the plant though, I had only myself to blame.

So many things to consider when speaking about this subject. Honestly its both in my eyes. Some people are just not strong minded people. And have difficulty dealing with hardships, addictions and life in general. This may thrust them into using more frequently and develop bad habits. A person may go thru a bad time in there life and use a substance to help them thru, also producing another problem

People do make bad choices, but life makes bad choices for us too sometimes. Its how you overcome the hardships that really matter.
