are CFLs (compact florescent lights) just as effective and give out the same type of light as the standard straight florescents?

5000k is a shitty spectrum, try to go for 5500-6500k to make it closer to daylight.

I have always been under the impression light did nothing for growth and was only for dictating the grow direction of your fruits? am I wrong?

I don't have a link to it, but I read somewhere relating to weed grows that color temp isn't all that critical with CFLs.  The logic is that the higher color temps of a daylight lamp are achieved by reducing light output at lower frequencies, so a daylight lamp puts out the same amount of blue spectrum at a given wattage as a "brilliant white" lamp.  It just puts off less red. So in other words a 5000k 15w will put out more red than a 6500k, but both will put out about the same blue.

I wish I had some harder data, but subjectively, the 5000k seem brighter than the 6500k.

That is incorrect.

Search 'color temperature' on google.  It's the best way to determine what light to get.  Anything from 5,000K to 7,000K is going to give good performance.

This may be just coincidence, or timing, but my friend noticed an exponential improvement in fruiting after putting a 6500k cfl above his FC last week. Its his first grow though, so he has nothing to compare to, but it seemed to him to make a HUGE difference. Pins that were pins for days shot up inches in 24 hours.

He also added a little heat to the room the fc was in, bringing the temp up from the low 60s to the low 70s. I believe that helped him out a lot as well.

Another way to state it is to compare two bulbs. One at 15 lumens with a color temp of 5500k, the other at 20 lumens at 4500k, the spectral balance of the 5500k may be proportionately more blue, while the 4500k puts out blue as well, along with lower frequencies.

The fact is that ALL CFLs put out significant blue and even UV light. This has even raised health concerns for some. Even a warm white CFL puts off MUCH more blue than an incandescent.

see "health issues"

If you're growing plants, I could see this being an issue, but with fungus I'd expect any standard fluorescent should work fine. A controlled study would be interesting.

It's already been done.

After a controlled study that covered dozens of grows with lights of all different spectrums, I started recommending 6500 Kelvin for growing mushrooms.  A year or two later, paul stamets started saying the same thing.

Thanks, good 'nuff.

I like the broad spectrum lights anyway, so I've got them. I've just been skeptical about the necessity. I'm surprised, but believe it.
