You want a MERV 20 to compete.. and laminar flow is an issue through these.

yeah.. I keep looking at those.. maybe build a box where you have polyfill behind that, and like a cheap MERV 8 pre filter.. I dunno

"A laminar flow cabinet or laminar flow closet or tissue culture hood is a carefully enclosed bench designed to prevent contamination"
I would think via mold spores as well.. I believe SIMZ has that right.. the trick is the Laminar Flow itself "Laminar flow, sometimes known as streamline flow, occurs when a fluid flows in parallel layers, with no disruption between the layers"

That's what I was trying to get at.. these filters provide "turbulent flow" not "laminar"

Wouldnt that just be depending on how big the fan is that you hook upto it? Like get a fan that doesnt produce that many cfm's to get the laminar flow

maybee I should have said. trapping spores is not the primary purpose of a laminar flow hood, as it is implied in this thread.
I just assumed we we were on the same page.
if proper filters were available for $30, most everyone could have a laminar flow hood.

the filters (in original post) are rated for 500cfm so by lowering that (as truskool suggested) the flow should be more laminar like

I dont think so.. because regardless of speed.. it is not smooth across the board.. turbulent flow.. is a disrupted flow, which will suck air into it from outside the filter area (surrounding unfiltered air).. That's why the laminar flow is so important.. it is not disrupted at any level.. would turning the speed down help? surely .. would building a MERV 14 flow hood, at low speed be better than open air? I am sure.. but I also think, without laminar flow, you are still better off in a glove box... I am not knocking this AT ALL.. I keeping looking for the cheap alternative myself as well.. but it never adds up right.

So pls forgive me but i just want to understand this. Is it the filter itself thats causing the turbulence? Like a filter that isnt rated high enough no matter the speed of the fan will cause turbulence?

i dont think so..
i was thinking of a box with no prefilter, stuffed with pollyfill and this filter on the front. bet it would work

I thought the box needs to build up proper pressure before exiting the proper filter.

I agree.. without a Laminar Flow rated filter.. that is what I came up with.. as the best bet. Just haven't tested it.. I have a huge glove box, but I hate it.. using it daily.. I would love a flow hood.. but just cant invest in the components anytime soon

Yes.. Laminar flow filters.. are different.. they take a lot of perfection to create. That is why they are expensive.
__________
P.S.
I love you guys.. I am just trying to relay what I have ended up finding to you. But I haven't done it.. and I do not think anyone else has.. so see the bottom of my sig.. GO FOR IT!
