Did I fry my mycelium
    #11269876 - 10/18/09 06:34 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

Guys I'm about to cry, I've had my first successful jar colonizing for a month now and towards the end my myc stopped growing, i realized i had put the aquarium heater on a few days ago because it was very cold in my house and the bottom has been hot to touch for a few days now, the bottom got coooked for sure. If the mycelium at the top is still alive will it grow over the dead mycelium?

Not likely, I would just start over. No sense in crying over spilled milk.

That's the biggest reason I advise to avoid incubators.  Besides, mushroom mycelium will colonize very well at normal room temperature.

The best incubator in the house is the cabinet above my fridge. It never goes below 75 and never above 79. If you are going to incubate, do it above the fridge.

Or above fridge that works but the temps are usually in the 80-84F range

So I checked on my jar again, and the mycelium started growing again and its almost 100% colonized. Its been over a month should I wait a week after full colonization still?

How hot was your heater on?

How hot would cook jars?

I'm not really sure, I had a light on which kept it at 80 but the heater was on for a few days warming the bottom to where it was very very warm, not so hot that you couldn't hold it but very very warm. The mycelium that was in direct contact with the heat appears a bit different than the rest, it almost resembles white paint. But I'm still going to try and fruit the jar

my incubating chamber is a shoebox...
even when temps get as low as the 50's (F) here, i just put the lid on the box...

heating the jars is just one more way for your grow to fail (as you have probly gathered by now lol)
good luck on the next one
