using pine needles after adjusting pH?
    #11267502 -

hey all. at this time of year, here in the pine forest, there are pine needles in piles and piles everywhere! i can seriously walk two feet from my front door and grab enough to fill up several large tubs.

from the searching i did it appears they are very acidic. what i want to do is use them in place of straw(or?) in bulk mono tubs with manure for cubes, Pan. cyans and possibley atl#7 and jalisco.

If i where to pasturize all the needles (after washing them off) in a solution with gypsum and either bicarb or lime or ? would the resulting softened needles be useable in a bulk tub?

does anyone have experience growing with pine needles?

i know straw is cheap etc. and this may be a lot more work. but its either i use it or i throw it away after rounding it up.

thanks y'all!

Hmmm. First, I know that some evergreens, like cedar, are powerfully antifungal. Also, aside from some exceptions like aminita muscaria, I don't see a lot of fungus growing around pine. In short, I wouldn't try it.

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

You might be able to boil pine needles and get rid of oils and resins and tannins.
Dunno about the acorns.
