Clitocybe Nuda and deformed Chanterelle?
    #11265536 - 10/17/09 02:48 PM (8 years, 1 month ago)

Thought these may be clitocybe nudas, but ive never found them.  They were growing pretty close together in a bunch of rotting leaves.  Some are pretty old.  No spore print yet.  Any help is appreciated.

Found this with a small batch of chants.  Is it a different species or just deformed?

Thanks!

What a great combo!  If you save the stem butts of the blewits, and put them in some soaked corrugated cardboard, you can grow your own blewits in compost!

Is it normal for chants to grow in that weird mass like that?  I've never seen them look like that.

Yeah most of the time you find Chants they'll be growing gregariously.

Your Chants look water soaked, nothing too unusual, but as selecting a Chant is, remember, you should prefer a firm Chant to a loose, or in this case, heavy and brittle spec.
Chants store a lot of water in the first place, this is why we saute them on low heat in an open pan, do that with these, and if im right, they will fall to mush..
FYI.

im actually cooking a small batch of mushroom soup with what i found.  i made it once before with chants and it was great.  its a simple recipe so it really lets you taste the mushroom.  here's the recipe:
http://www.seriouseats.com/recipes/2008/02/dinner-tonight-bourdains-mushroom-soup-recipe.html

ive never found nor cooked blewits before, does anyone have any suggestions?  im afraid that i can't make much with them though, i think the majority of them are too old.

Blewits are best cooked with meats to supplement their peppery taste.

There's no need to parboil them, no. Great finds!

All those Blewits pictured look perfectly fresh to eat. I made some the other day with purple potatoes and purple onions and had them with a ribeye steak. They would probably pair well with the Chants in a soup, as they are both somewhat fruity and peppery.
