Small yield from 1st casing (pics added)
    #11264483 - 10/17/09 08:58 AM (14 years, 5 months ago)

I've been reading all the posts on casings, including the 50/50+, watering methods, and Casing 101... and can't seem to figure out what to do at this point, so hopefully someone here can help me out.

I wish I had kept a log of my grow, but here goes:

Cased ~2" depth using dry verm @ bottom, PF cakes sliced like cucumbers, then coir/oyster shell/verm to top it off. Set in the dark for a week, and then put in a fruiting chamber. Have a space heater in the grow room to keep the ambient temp up, and also am using perlite and evaporated H2O for moisture. However, the humidity is still not very high, so I'm adding a vapomist to the room as well. I am also fanning/misting 2-3x per day.

Needless to say, after about two weeks, which brings me to where I am today, one of my casings finished its first flush, which was only a few mushrooms sprouting out of a few areas of its casing. Nothing at all like the pictures you see here where mushies are growing from all over the myc.

2nd flush hasn't even started, do I need to completely spray it down until near saturation with water?

Also, first flushes on the 2nd and 3rd casings has just started. Showing the same pattern of low yield. Is there anything I should do to try and save the flushes???

In summation, my 2 questions were:
1)How to I ensure a healthy 2nd flush
2)For my other casings just starting their 1st flush, should I be doing anything differently? More H2O?
Thanks for all the help!

2 inch depth seems like way too much casing.  What is the depth of the substrate?

I don't really measure the casing I just eye it, I think 1/4 inch is just about the amount you need DEPENDING on the height of the substrate

Got some pics... so these mushrooms ended up getting ridiculously large.
I wasn't able to pick them all day and they dropped spores all over themselves, which is i think the reason why the caps are all black... is this still ok?

In addition, the casing now has a covering of black spores all over it... is this alright or should I scrape that top layer off to prep it for the 2nd flush???

thought so. but what about the mycelium? Should the spores be scraped from it or should i just douse it with water and begin its 2nd flush with the spores all covering it?

with it covering it, the spores do no harm,
inaddition, if you were to scrape it you might mildly damage the mycelium, making it have to regenerate wasting nutriets.
