what do you think of....
    #11264583 - 10/17/09 11:26 AM (8 years, 1 month ago)

......spawning old substrate to compost?

i have a compost pile of mostly leaves and grass cuttings. the bottom of the pile is about 1 year old. i also have some 64qt mono tub subs that aren't quite spent. they never really gave flushes, they just kept fruitning for 6-8 weeks. the yeilds have been less and less every few days but i think they will give a few more if i let them. however i moved them into a GH and now i want them out.

should i ;

1- smushem and mix with some compost? if so, what are the odds the tired myc will expand again, assuming the compost has what the myc needs?

2- or just dunk and kind of case them with the compost?

it's been very wet and cool here lately (mid 40's to 60f ) but it's supposed to be back to normal (mid50's to 70f) in another day or two. either way their going outside. i don't really care if they fail, they've already been pretty good to me (QP dry each:biggrin:). i just want to give them the best chance i can outside with what i've got.

i've never used this compost other than for veg. garden. mabey i'll pasturize some and try w/ a qt of spawn another day.:shrug:

just crush em up and throw em on the pile. thats what i do. and two times i have found pins forming. the only problem is i'm always turning my compost piles. but give it a try.

I think your best off smushing them and mixing with the compost. Water them every day if it doesnt rain and hopefully you can get something outta nothing

yeah i might do that, then stick it back in the mono tubs. the tubs are going outside in a screened storage shed anyway. they may as well have something in it. i want to dig a hole for them but i'll probobly wait till i get more oyster spores for that.

i did an outdoor thing a while ago but it got infested fast.

it was nice for 2 flushes, then the bugs came in droves, they ate about 2 big handfulls in one day.:hissyfit: it was all down hill after that. i started in mar./apr. and by the end of may there was no saving it. it gets way buggy around here. i could barely do anything in the yard this year. i've got to figure out another plan for outdoor shit over the short winter.

anyway i just took those subs and crumbled them into different sections of he compost, they were a lot dryer than i expected. i'm supprized they were still putting out fruit. i mixed them approx. 50/50 with wet comp. and dumped some water on them. there were a lot of big pins on some so i tried to keep those parts intact and on top. we'll see soon. i'll try and post pics if they do anything.

I throw my old spent/contamed subs in the same spot outdoors and just cover with straw or botched/contamed grain jars and I get another flush in a week or so when I do that. :shrug:

i've been dumping my spent stuff in the same spot for a year now and i never see anything. i think it just dries out. when i'm lazy i put contaminated sub in this screened storage out back and i'll run into it like a week after i forgot about it and find 5-6 fruits in a sea of green. bitter sweet i guess. lol.
