Heres my problem..
    #11264412 - 10/17/09 10:31 AM (8 years, 7 days ago)

I have a fruiting chamber with a layer of perlite i have a few holes for air exchange. I can see condensation on the top and walls. the hygrometer says the RH is at 90%. the temp inside has been unstable going from like 80 (when i have a light on it) to a little over 60 (after a day at work) needless to say I have not had any luck pinning.( i do fan about 4 or 5 times a day) To try and bring the temp up I started using a heating pad but i'm having no success keeping the temperature up that way. from what i have read here i will need a stable temperature above 75 and RH as close to 100%. So my plan is to use an aquarium heater in in a jar of water to try and keep the temp stable and add more perlite to bring up the RH. My question is does this sound like a feasible solution? Any other tips would be great Thanks for taking the time to read and post!

Using a heating pad? Don't you have holes on the bottom of your shotgun?

Most folks keep there homes somewhere between 68F-78F. These temps would be fine for fruiting cubs.

I never recommend heating pads, some use them with success, but I do not recommend them.

Cubs fruit between 72-78 ideally, but if it gets a little colder now and then you will have no problems.  You would run into much more trouble overheating your grow.

You didn't mention what kind of light you are using... first fae, then light, and after that worry about temperature.

How long have the cakes been in the FC?  Everything could be fine and you just need to wait a few more days.
And how many inches of perlite?

If the light heats up the terrarium that much, you're probably using an incandescent light bulb, which is almost as bad as no light at all.  Use fluorescent.  That's probably also why your humidity is low.  For a given amount of moisture in the air, a 20F temperature rise will cut the relative humidity in half.

Air exchange is the number one pinning trigger, so you need more holes or to fan more.  Get rid of any heating pads etc.  If you're growing in your house, they're not necessary, and actually counterproductive.  It's the reason you have condensation, even though your humidity is too low.

Thanks for the advice. I'm using a spot grow light for the light. the holes are on the side of the bin. I have removed the heating pad. As for the light should that be 12 on 12 off? I dont want to over heat the grow so i'll move the light up more. so  i guess my next question is should i use just a regular old florescent energy saver light bulb instead? Thanks again for all the help!

Although i may advise others in a general way regarding all types of mushroom grows, and may even post question from other forums about growing "active" mushrooms, i only grow non-"active" mushrooms and edibles.

To heat up your terrarium, you can try constructing one of these:
