wiring up dayton blower
    #11264159 - 10/17/09 08:09 AM (8 years, 6 days ago)

have just acquired a series III flowhood from FP and are having a bit of a hard time figuring out how to wire up the blower(Model # 4C831B - FP universal current blower). am in the UK so are in 230V if that makes any difference to how to wire it up.
the blower motor has 5 cables coming off it (black and red which are bound together, white, blue and orange). was kind of just expecting 3 cables...
dont know much about electrics, any help would be appreciated.

well black and red should be your hots, white would be your neutral, usually blue and orange colors would be control something else in your device. heater, light etc, in there is nothing else to it then they are wire nut off and left. no green though makes me thing that the electric wiring may be different in the UK then the states. if you google your flowhood with its numbers for a wiring diagram you can usually find the specs for it. you can find anything online.  i wired up gas pumps from the early 1990s yesterday and found the specs on google.

its actually an american blower, but it operates in dual voltage. im pretty clueless about electrics, but think you might have to wire it up differently depending on wether you want it running in 115 or 230V. couldnt find any diagrams on google...

oh and theres a separate set of cables coming off the other side of the motor and connecting in with some screws (one is green and yellow, and then theres a brown one and a gray one). manual says that it nees to be earthed so i kind of assumed that one of the 5 wires would have to be connected to the earth of the plug?

am pretty confused...

having camera problems but heres what the diagram looks like:

white-----------line                  white----------line
orange---|      |                      orange---        |
red------|    115V                    red--------|  230V
blue            |                      black------|    |
black-----------line                  blue-----------line

and then grey and brown go to capacitor on both.
any ideas?

edit: cant get the formatting right on this, on 115V white and black connected (line), orange and red connected.
on 230V white and blue connected (line), red and black connected and orange has a little line after it.

You really need to borrow a camera and take a picture of the wiring diagram.  With that info, I can easily tell you what to do.  Don't take any chances.

Any electrician worth his salt should be able to look at the data plate and easily wire it up.  If you can't find a camera, take the motor to a heat and air conditioning shop and ask them to connect a cable and plug to it so you can just plug it in whenever you want it to run.

Looks like for 230V white and blue go to the plug, red and black are connected and black orange is unused. -edit

thanks. yeah that seems to make sense. so blue will be live, white will be neutral, but does that mean its already grounded? cos instructions seem to put quite  a lot of emphasis on ensuring it is...

I think you've got it, and I was wondering about the grounding. Standard grounding wires are green. Do you see anything like this on the device? It could be on the outer chassis. Or, you may find a ground screw, probably with a ground schematic symbol embossed in the metal. You would connect the power cord ground lead here.

separate from that set of 5 cables, theres some sort of resistor (sorry, am a bit crap at electrics, small plastic box with some wires, think its a resistor) with two screws next to it, one has a green and yellow wire going to it, the other is empty. is that where i wire the earth from the power cable from?

thanks kindly for the help, cant wait to get it running, but just wanted to be totally sure before i plugged anything in

Could be, but I don't see why their would be a resistor. It almost sounds like a fuse. I'd really need a pic.

I'm sure we've got the hot and neutral down, but unless we decisively find the ground point [or earth as you say in the UK], better have someone take a look. Please update when this is resolved.
