vegetable oil in WBS spawn
    #11262948 - 10/17/09 12:18 AM (8 years, 8 days ago)

I may have done something stupid, but I'm not sure it makes any difference anyway.  I had heard about possible benefits of veg oil, and I added about a teaspoon of canola [rapeseed] to a soak with about four cups WBS. I could swear that I had read about this on the forums, but all I could find was info on its use in substrates. I figured a teaspoon wouldn't be that significant and seeds have oils anyway, but it is noticeable; when I put my hand in the soak, I can feel that the oil is there. It's not like a ton of it, and most will probably pour off after I boil and strain, but does anyone have experience with this?

I have read about it being used as a fruiting inducer, but the article didn't specify the point in the growing cycle that it was being administered.

That article is hard to follow but apparently they added the oils they tested at the time of spawning to bulk?

The way they describe it, as inducing pins, it might be better to apply it in a spray bottle diluted w/ water when it's first exposed to fruiting conditions.

It was interesting in that article how the more nutritious substrates showed a much greater improvement in first flush yield. Seems to be a metabolic enhancer or something.

Is a worthwhile experiment you have going on there.

It turns out that the article slimz linked to talked about putting it in the bulk substrate [must have been writing while you were editing].  I also am soaking in weak coffee as some will go to a GLC for sclerotia, so I have too many balls in the air for anything remotely conclusive.  Some will also go to some Burma.  It seems that there was quite a buzz about coffee awhile back that died out. I don't know why, but we'll see.

coffee buzz died out because caffeine wears off.. but seriously coffee is great but does lead to contams...

It's still used plenty in substrate, where contams are a big issue, but I'm talking about use in sterilized spawn jars, where it's much less so.

The Coffee Project

Looks like RR and others were all over it at the time.

coffee is a valid additive, but we all know about it now so we have moved on..

thats the point of a "buzz"

If it's "valid", does that mean everyone uses it but doesn't talk about it any more?  I'm not trying to be a smartass, but if it works, why isn't it standard along with gypsum?

if you read the teks, you'll see that its a very common additive,,

CCV is a common acronym that means Coffee/Coir/Verm

Sure, and I plan to use CCV.  The thing I'm referring to is the use of coffee in soaking grains for spawn.  I still see this, but now I only find it recommended for the sclerotia forming species. Check that Coffee Project thread out.

Gypsum is more of a standard than coffee because gypsum really helps with doing grains correctly. Coffee is an optimizer when you get everything else right.

soaking my WBS in 1/2 coffee 1/2 water is the only addition I make to Doc's WBS Tek besides drying it a bit more thoroughly ( i have trouble with that for some reason )

You might try simmering for ten minutes, then throwing it in a colander and tossing a bit while hot, this steams of the excess moisture.

I like putting coffee in bulk. It's nutritious, free and I don't believe the poster above who said it leads to contams. I leave the coffee in a plastic container at room temperature for weeks at a time. Rarely is there mold in it. Sometimes maggots. Doesn't appear to harbor a lot of bacteria either. I think that's why they recommend it for your compost pile.

But for grain, I don't see a big benefit in it. Lets say you manage to speed up colonization time by 1 day; so what? And that's being generous. I'm not sure it speeds anything up at all.

Grain is already very nutritious, I don't really see a point to supplementing it. I even stopped adding gypsum. It's hard to notice any difference. Rye, wheat, wild bird seed, and popcorn all seem the same to me too.

yeah.. i myself have ran across something about using oil but cant seem to remember what specifically it was referenced towards... as far as excess water.. (i.e. fanning grains and what not to dry em up a bit before pc'ing) i just throw in some vermiculite to dry it up.. keep us posted on the oil thing though.. now for gypsum, it has seem to reduce some initial sticking after which i really dont notice a significant enough difference whether it be in the jars or the bulk substrates

i agree with anonjo for the most part on the above comment.. most of these so called additives seem t be bullshit
